it's just another way of measuring pressure. I think it was 14.7psi = 1 bar.

The bar (symbol bar), decibar (symbol dbar) and the millibar (symbol mbar, also mb) are units of pressure. They are not SI units, nor are they cgs units, but they are accepted for use with the SI. The bar is still widely used in descriptions of pressure because it is about the same as atmospheric pressure.

The pound per square inch or, more accurately, pound-force per square inch (symbol: psi or lbf/in² or lbf/in²) is a unit of pressure or of stress based on avoirdupois units. It is the pressure resulting from a force of one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch:

1 psi (6.894757 kPa) : Pascal (Pa) is the SI unit of pressure

Generally the psi scale is in UK cars.

There's always one smart arse

to be honest, once it's set up, you get to 'know' your gauges so the units are irrelevant - as long as you notice if/ when one of them is showing an abnormal reading...
