over the last week or so me and the misses have been have a think about the future and where we want to be in life in a few years. We want a family and need a bigger house, we cant afford anything round are area but there are some nice houses in wales that are cheaper that the house we are in at the mo. We have been to wales a few times on holiday, but it aint really a good indication of what its like. So was wondering if some of you that live there could tell us what you think of the place

One of my friends parents had a house build in wales, huge house etc but they cannot find any jobs they want. Its being going on now for about a year and a half.

theres a few welsh members on here, go into the meets section and ask on there, car mad (aka Dave) might be able to give you a few pointers

i live in wales. yes jobs are hard to come by but there're there, as you say you work in tesco so you should be ok. i'm self-employed plumber and heating engineer and i have never been out of work since the day i left school so there is work.

Cheapest houses are in Port Talbot...but wouldn't live there ever!!

I work in Wales from time to time and I do like it, there are some lovely areas and the people are always friendly. Nicer than the English!

Believe it or not, Wales is a pretty big place and it generally depends on the area that you're thinking of.

My experience is limited regarding jobs in Wales, bet I'll put my tuppence worth in anyway.

North Wales - pretty rural, not much industry since the slate mining all but ceased

Midwales - Great if you're a farmer

West Wales - Farming again I'm afraid, with the exception of Swansea which is I suppose, South-West Wales, but as the Rhys Ifans stated in the Movie "Twin town", it's a pretty sh1tty city....

South Wales along the M4 corridor is pretty good for jobs, travelling, commiting etc... I live nr. Pontypridd and currently work in Bridgend, for 12K more than I was on working in bristol, so the money thing is rubbish. You get paid what you're worth. Where I live is about 1 hour from Bristol/Swansea if you want to commute, quite rural and quiet but Cardiff if 10 miles away, so it's the best of both worlds.

House prices are stagnant at the moment. A New 3 bed detached is still gonna cost about 200K and the price goes up from there. there are cheaper areas, but they are cheaper for a reason... No offence mean't to anyone in one of those area....

Lot's of jobs in Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Bristol (if you don't mind the bridge toll and 1 hr commute (i did it for 4 years and didn't think it was problem).

Nice area's in S.Wales, which aren't to posh, but also not to scruffy.

Llantrisant (very old village)

Beddau (50:50 this one - nice with a rough exterior)

Church Village

Llantwit Fardre

Vale of Glamorgan (posh)

Peterson Super Ely (posh)

Cowbridge (some great roads)

Bridgend (not wildmill/sarn however)

Llandaff (some excellent private schools (bishop of llandaff, cathedral school (boys and mixed) and howells girls school))

Rhadyr

Pentyrch

Creigiau

I only know of 2 big tesco stores (Talbot Green and Llandaff)

The closer to cardiff, the higher the prices.

If you decide to come down south let me know when and I'll try and arrange a sort of sight seeing expedition.

Regards

Paul.

Whats wrong with Port Talbot dude.

The surrounding countryside is beautiful, but the Port Talbot skyline is dominated by this...the hugely ugly, and run-down looking Corus steel plant. On a lighter note, Corus is a big employer in the area with that and the site at Llanwern.

In a 70bhp van?? LOL It losses its charm i must admit when there are hills involved.

Might go for a run up there later after i've eaten, see whats what.

back to the post reason....It's bloody great!! To be honest though if 70k is your budget then you'll be looking at Valley towns in some of the more depressed ex-mining communities where work is still scarce. That's of course if south Wales/cardiff and surrounding areas is what you mean. ..You get a mix of people in all communities, but the lack of work for some can have an air of depression. I live in a lovely area called Llantwit Fardre bewteen Llantrisant and Pontypridd. The beach in Porthcawl is 20 minutes away for surfing and the Brecon beacons for mountain walks 20 minutes up the valley. Cardiff is about 8 miles away through the lanes and about 12 via the motorway....Nice and peaceful and i love it!!!
