Hello all..i've noticed recently that my UK auto gearbox keeps down shifting for no reason at all. It started off every now and then but I had a long 3hr drive last night up the M6 and if I hold the revs around 3k, every 15-20secs or so it would shift down not one, but two gears! Bloody annoying as at around 70/80 it just doesn't sound or feel healthy! If I hold the revs, it soon shifts back but again, after a while, bumps down a few gears! Especially annoying if its in cruise but I can control it slightly when foot on the pedal as lift off each time it starts but gets very tiring doing that 4times a mionute for 3hrs!!

So...what could it be? I'm not mechanically minded and know more about quantum physics than about Zed mechanics (probably!) so any advice would be most welcome! I'm hoping its just some sensor that needs a gentle tap??

That sounds easy enough I guess...but to find a computer and the software first!! I imagine there must be someone in/close to London with the tools and know-how?

search for the link to do your own gearbox diagnostics in the car as you dont require anything apart from moving the gearstick and turning the ignition on and off !

Ok, so I've carried out the auto transmission diagnostic twice now and it has come up with code '10' - all clear! So....anyone have any ideas what else could be causing my abnormal gear shifting prob??

Whens the last time you changed the fluid?

ummm.... not since I've owned it which is jsut over a year....you think it might be down to that alone? I figured it would be some sensor related problem but then I'm not mechanical genius...as you know!:mac1:

first thing i would do would change the fluid, who knows how long its been in there hay?

I guess....time for a 'how to' search I think! Cheers bud...

hi, theres a nut on the gearbox sump. Get the car up and level and drain the fluid through the drain plug (nut underneath), you can also take the sump cover off and check the seive for any particles etc. One of the traders on here can provide a new seive and a new gasket for putting the sump cover back on.

You re-fill the box via the dipstick tube in the engine bay. Mine took just over 8 litres of dexron iii oil.

:d Best to change the filter too i guess.

Thanks bud! More reason to get it done now then!!

Come today mate, il change your oil and you can also help me :D
