At around 3500 revs on a steady throttle the car seems to hesitate and stutter like it's running out of petrol.

It's an N/A manual import if that helps.

Try cleaning the coil and injector connectors, worked for me for a while, but started hesitating again recently, iv'e just ordered new injector connectors from MJP.

if it was raining id say MAF as mine does this due to no protection, but its not so im without an answer

I think with the problem being at a certian rev range and not lumpy at idle the injector and coil pack connects may be ruled out.

MAF is a good contender to the problem as this will sometimes cause an issue as the turbo's start to spool requiring more air.

Does it do it only once warmed up ?

If so check your O2 sesnsors as my money is on one of these giving up the ghost.

It looks like a dirty MAF, there's a split in the airbox and the mesh on the front of the MAF has a film of dirt on it. can it be cleaned or do i need to replace it?

You can clean the MAF but BE VERY CAREFUL! Try not to touch the filament inside the MAF because if this is damaged you'll need to fork out for a new MAF. If the mesh is not too badly torn I suggest you leave it in place. If it is beyond repair then take it off completely -- it is fairly safe to run an unprotected maf so long as you have good filtration (ie Apexi filter or the like).

I have another suggestion for your symptoms - possibly the fuel temp sensor. Check the connector for corrosion or replace.

dirty throttle bodies?

No - they only tend to affect idle as the pass-through gets clogged whilst the butterflies are closed.

its a non turbo stu
