Now maybe I'm a bit out of touch with what people get paid these days, but these geezers who are 'just' lorry drivers, are getting £36K a year and have rejected £41K. Now sure it's a responsible job and there is a safety element involved etc but it seems like a heap of cash compared with what a lot of other people, who arguably have more 'important' jobs, are paid. Ultimately, all jobs are important to society, whether that be bin men, Doctors, Police, Nurses (and even IT Consultants lol), but I know a lot of people who are earning around half what these guys get.

Anyone else thought about that ?

Me and my brother in law said the same thing when watching the news yesterday!

Yeah when you look at the average Soldier in Afgan getting 19k, And thats with all the war allowances. :smash:

well im a skilled machinist (turner /miller) plus general engineering and i couldn't dream of that sort of money. im under 20K:mad::nelson:

boils my fookin piss, its like the fookin firemen, they knew the rate of pay when they took the job, dont see their fookin prob, they say and i quote "we are driving bombs", so fookin what, you are getting 40k a year, privates in afgahn are getting 16k a year and somone is actually trying to kill them, as in trying to shoot lead into thier bodies till they no longer have a breathn to take

they are saying that shell has made so much profit and they want some, shell is a business, of course they are going to make hooge profits, if i was in business i would want to make lots of money aswell

people dont realise that they didnt make the profit out of our little piddly island of a country, they made that world wide

if you aint happy with the pay, go and work somewhere else

its mr brown that makes the most out of our oil, not the oil company themsleves

Greed has got the better of them I think...

They are like any other lorry driver out there...

*They can only work a maximum average of 48 hour working week or a maximum of 60 hours working time in any fixed week.

*They can only work a maximum of 10 hours in any 24 hour period

*They have to take breaks from work - cant work more than 6 hours without a break.

*A 30 minute break is needed if working time is over 6 but not over 9 hours, or 45 minutes if over 9 hours.

*Breaks must interrupt working time - they may not be taken at the very start or end of a shift.

So just cause they carry liquid that could blow their brains out... they think they deserve more money....... well some lorry drivers operate cranes that could crush their body to pieces - nowt special about the tank drivers!!

GET OVER IT AND DO SOME WORK!!!

Army guys get less and they fight for the country!!!!

*disclaimer - above statements are general working time 'rules' and may vary with different types of jobs ie: ambulance etc *

A bit out of touch with what people get paid these days! try fookin 12-13 years ago.

I spent 5 years working as a mechanic on the tankers for BP, when I first started 13 years ago the drivers were reportedly making £36000 a year with their shift allowance and a little overtime. Esso drivers were supposed to be on £40k. And probably best not mention the lump sum and pension...........

I agree with the above statements........

.........everyone wants to earn a fortune for doing anything amounting to nothing nowadays - I call it the "Big Brother Generation Syndrome" after reading how much a talentless bint like Jade Goody is now worth:eek:

If they worked for me I'd sack the lot of them and employ some people who would be glad to have their jobs.

seconded!

i'm a driver/ transport manager i both drive and i am responsable for everything else i get nowhere even close to that

well im a skilled machinist (turner /miller) plus general engineering and i couldn't dream of that sort of money. im under 20K:mad::nelson:

skilled???

puts into perspective what bus drivers get and their cargo is people, so imho far more responsible!!

It's private sector though, they can demand whatever they want and why shouldn't they have a share of the profit. Why should footballers get tens of thousands pounds per week - because they are just getting a share of the profits the club makes. If anything we should complain about what everything costs us nowadays, clearly we are paying too much for everything.

The issue is that they are not employed by Shell, who, like most big companies, pay a fair rate etc.

The footballer thing, well they are in a fairly unique position and if they didn't earn money for the club then they wouldn't be there. Incidentally, our footballers etc, don't look too rich when compared with the US baseball (rounders), basketball (netball), football (rugby with padding and losts of rest breaks) players.

Greed has got the better of them I think...

you can work 15hrs a day with a 9hr rest period at least twice a week .

Also can only drive for 4.5 hrs then have to take a 45min break or drive 2.25hrs 30min break drive for another 2.25hrs 15 min break.

Or any combination making 4.5 hours driving as lon as the first break is 30min

Who wouldnt like a payrise I certainly would:bow:

Who wouldnt like a payrise I certainly would:bow:

we could all do with a payrise due to the stupid economy at the moment ....

:( :(

don't think its the actuall payrise thats an issue..... its the amount they are getting at the moment and what they are asking for in relation to what they do for a living.... just doesnt make sense!! But thats when you compare it to salaries of other people around you... ... I'm sure if our salaries went up over with the rate of inflation instead of poxy 2.5% increases or whatever annually - £41K wouldn't seem so stupid for a tanker driver... :)

I might have read this wrong but my understanding is that they were on £35K when Shell sold out to a sub contractor years ago. They haven't had a pay rise since moving companies. That's why they are up in arms.

I personally don't think £35K-£40K isn't too much for a full time class 1 heavy goods driver, carrying fuel full time. I'd say it's about right.

I carry things alot more dangerous than fuel an dont get any where near what there getting paid:headvswal

ok so they're carrying a dangerous load. So should they crash ..are they only allowed to hit people earning 35k? cos if they crash they are not gonna be the only casualties. Pay rise.. I'd cut their pay in half or tell 'em to f### off. This greed is the reason we have so many european workers coming to the uk. I'm joiner with 20 years experience out of 30 people I work with only 1 other can do nearly what I can. I get £25k and am gratefull for that. I also am at high risk due to machinery I use. If i protested and blocked the gates of our yard I'd be out on my arse or should I instead blockade a fuel depot to hold the country hostage for a pay rise which would be otherwise none of their concern. By blackmailing the country they should get their own way? I'd sooner stop driving than force even higher fuel prices. they are imho unlikely to get much public support now they have highlighted what they earn

boils my fookin piss, its like the fookin firemen, they knew the rate of pay when they took the job,

You trying to boil my piss!

The thing that makes me laugh about attitudes in this country, is the selfish viewpoint people have, years ago people used to say good luck with earning more money, now people say why should they earn more than me!

It's fantastic they way the government have conned everyone that they are no longer working class, everyone is split up and chewing each other up at the bottom of the food chain.

God forbid that anyone involved in normal work gets a payrise or that would mean the economy would nose dive, a convenient way for the government to control the nation, or the oh so troublesome ex-working class!

So would you say a fruit picker should earn the same as a brain surgeon? both do manual work. Years ago people got the plauge ricketts and scurvey doesn't mean it's a good thing. I'm happy with the pay I get as I can live ok witihin my means and have a happy lifestyle.
