Long story short.

Finally got the autobox fitted I bought from a member on here (now banned)

And there seemed to be a small vibration that started about at 1500rpm.

Spoke to Phil at Blackmoor services and he said it could be a bent flex plate.

Took it over to him yesterday and left it. He rang to say it wasn’t the flex plate.

Picked it up this morning with the vibration still there but not as bad.

Manchester to Leeds no problems. Pulled into my street and thought somebody had started a lawnmower in the car. Very loud metal to metal grinding sound in all gears even park and neutral although not as bad.

Checked the fluid level and its fine and pink but does smell slightly burnt.

Does anybody else agree that the box has gone t*ts up.

Very p*ssed off. :headvswal

Save yourself all the hassle and........................ get a manual conversion.

I wondered how long it would take, lol.

Really dont want to go manuel though.

SOrry to hear that! sounds quite terminal. Did you by it in good faith? or was it sold as good working order etc? Did you pay with paypal? as they can help you with getting the money recovered

yes mate, was told it was working fine and was a reconditioned unit.

Another member backed up that it was a reconed unit.

I'm not blaming the seller, box may have been fine prior to removal and could just be one of those things. Sh*t happens.

I've tried to contact the seller but with no joy.

Just looking for confirmation it's f**ked before I fork out for another :(

Yep shit happens with auto boxes. I sold one(not on this forum :nono:) to a friend/motor mechanic. The box came from a car which had front end damage. Engine and box even the rad were all untouched. We test drove it around my local short private test route the week prior to removal. Took it out. It sat around a couple of months before it was fitted...... went in to drive OK. My mate pulled away ... and it failed within a mile:eek:

Resigned myself to the fact it's gone to autobox heaven.

On the search for another.

Sorry to hear mate. In a few weeks I will be taking out my autobox for a manual conversion. Your welcome to test drive mine if you want to.

I'd pull it off and strip it down mate. but from the metal to metal sound i would say its the planarity gear that's gone (usually go if its not getting enough oil) and you can buy individual parts to replace the damage. They are not as complex as people make out and if you are ok with working on the car the auto box is not much worse :)

Would have a go at this but with no workshop, ramp, or the time it's not really an option.

Hoping to have it sorted by the end of the week. Got a garage 4 doors up from me so all I need to do is source a good box and get it delivered.

sorry to hear this mate, have you not spoke to duffers as he always knows where there is a good box

Very true.

He calls her Saz apparently :wack: :nelson:

guess you can never tell. I have a second box, cost me £200 inc torque convertor and prop & bearing etc and is on 1500 miles at the moment

Thanks for all the replies guys, and to those that offered their boxes, ooh er.

Getting a good low mileage one with torque converter delivered from Andy Stokes.

Wondering if I can get a lightened flywheel for an auto TT and if so from where ?

Fill.

No, Auto's dont have flywheels. Just a ring gear for the starter motor to engage, and that weighs very little anyway.

Is the Ring gear also known as a flex plate ?

Cheers.

Got one of those as Phil thought it could be that causing the vibration.

Not much weight there and easy to bend.
