Hi all

Since posting the symptoms of my auto box fault a few weeks back, I know know what is wrong.

Basically it's fooked!

I have no 2nd and o/d is questionable. Therefore I have 3 choices:

A full rebuild (by an experienced chap who has been in the auto box business for 30 years and knows his stuff - plus he came highly recommended) for £1200.

A manual conversion (I know - but no manual vs auto comments please)

A second hand 'box (which may last 10 years or 10 minutes)

Your opinions welcome please!

Richard:)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

my honest opinion as someone who had the same problem. convert it. i miss slamming my right foot on the pedal and holding onto the steering wheel for dear life, but i much prefer manual. i enjoy the control, slamming the gears into place, and the direct feel of the power responding to my demand (this has gone a little S&M hasnt it! lol)

manwell conversion

If you decide to go down the replacement autobox route - I will have one available in a week

Replacement 2nd hand autobox is a risk. Obviously the cheapest option, but could end up costing as much as the other 2 when the 1st box fails..and your not going to get warranty on a 2nd hand box.

Autobox rebuild and Manual conversion are going to cost about the same, so its down to preference really. You dont want a auto vs manual war so I wont comment further LOL and Im sure you know the advantages already....my vote would be the manual conversion everytime.

if you do go manual make sure you get a known good box from a good source and a decent clutch !!!!!

I have had both, first an auto, now the manual. MUCH prefer the manual, even when just pottering about, the 300 seems to be more a manual car than an auto.

Have you tried Ken at STA? He knows his stuff when it comes to autos. Tell him I sent you.

Hi Mark

It is Ken who diagnosed the fault and he has offered to do the re-build for me!!

I have decided to let STA work their stuff on my auto box. Thanks for everone's sugestions (and Jeremy for the 'box) but despite the cost, I know that I will be getting mine built to a known high standard with a 12k mile warranty. With any 2nd hand box, auto or manual, you never know how much life is left in it; I don't want to have another replacement in 12 months time!

I think another recommendation for STA from Mark helped make my mind up!

I have known Ken since I was about 14, and I am now 50, so some time. He knows his stuff.

:-)

Sorry for the hijack but is this STA in Knowle (Solihull) by any chance? If not could you PM me his contact details please as I need one of my AT boxes rebuilding and upgrading shortly.

Thanks!

Dan
