Thanks to everyone for the help on the lights question.

I have tried the lights, they all work but the normal driving lights are poor.

I was recommneded to upgrade from 55w to 100w. I had a look at powerbulbs.com - there are loads of bulbs.

Can somebody recommend some. The site says i need type H4 for a 300ZX (does that hold for a jap import? - is it a case of just plugging them in?)

Powerbulbs is offering Philips, Ring or Osram but the site does not say what wattage they are...

Are these types legal? Did i hear about some bulbs being illegal?

Thanks

Barry

All I know is that ur sidelights cant be anything other than the normal yellow, you can have blue headlights though, or i presume any other colour. As it doesnt change the colour I can't see them being illegal cos they are brighter.

Check out JeffTT's bacofoil upgrade - most who have this think it's the dog's. This and other info is listed http://www.300zx.org.uk/tech_17.htm

Some say that 100w bulbs draw too much current for the standard wiring loom and even melt plastic bits in the headlamp which is not good.

Leigh got hold of 85w bulbs which a bunch of us had fitted - but I haven't taken her out in the dark since so can't say if they work (I'm sure they'll be better).

BTW bulbs for J imports have a different fitting so you either have to get J market bulbs or do a bit of soldering. The ones Leigh sourced were J market.

Hairsy (I think) had good results by simply cleaning the inside of the lens unit by poking a bottle brush up it.

Lastly, I discovered (well, JeffTT did) that a previous J owner had fitted an extra wiring loom to my Z just for the headlights - using the original loom just to drive a relay on a feed direct from the battery. The OEM look is a bit cr*p so you get voltage drop which doesn't help the current draw or brightness. Apparently this was quite a common mod as even J drivers found OEM lights a little dim.

I think that the standard bulb is an H3c, the c denoting the earthing pin as the bulb has 2 pins against an H3 bulb which has one pin for the UK. I fitted UK H3 100w bulbs about 4/5 months ago along with the soldered on earth wire as per the tech notes and so far (fingers crossed) no electrical/wiring problems. Nice and bright too. I understand that there are bulb manufacturers that make a H3c in higher than 55w but I have never been able to find one of them.

"For legal purposes": However just cos it worked for me doesn't mean it will work for someone else.

Short answer - do a search for Leigh on this forum and drop him an e-mail. He got my last lot.

Longer answer:

https://www.a-pp.com/acatalog/A_PP_Online_Catalog_H1_H3_H4_Fitting_89.html

http://www.piaa.co.uk/catalog/Bulb%20Section/plasmaion.htm

but IIRC these are all more £ than Leigh.

Longer answer still:

amble over to www.google.com and stick H3C Bulb in the box and off you go.
