hi, bought a tt on ebay (not a good idea), and it smoked really badly, but only when warm, on idle and more from the right hand side exhaust.

so had turbos sent off to ITS and completely rebuilt with all new internals,

and it still smoked but not as bad,

so had pcv valves and hoses replaced, genuine nissan uk parts,

you can probably guess, it still smokes, not as bad as origionally, but bad enough to be too emarassing to sit in traffic,

i called the very helpfull people at Z world for advise this morning, and i am very greatful for their words of wisdom, and they recon there must still be loads of oil in the plenims, which must be true.

but i cant understand why it would only smoke on idle? surely it would smoke all the time? unless the oil in the plenims sticks to the edges when you drive along, then runs down when you stop???

they said keep driving it around for about 500 miles,

ok but if its not smoking when you drive, it cant be clearing it out?

so would you believe the fault is only oil in the plenims now?? or could it be something else too?

and would it be better to let it idle all day and smoke the neighbourhood out??

what does anyone think?? please help? im not convinced yet that this is the fault and driving it is the cure?

i dont like the thought of driving around and making any damage worse?

please help, all your thoughts are much appreciated

iv owned this car nearly 6 months now and iv never enjoyed it yet, i dont even use it, its been a nightmare

i'll stick with it because im sure it'll be a pleasure when everything is fixed.

she looks very pretty, but she's really been abused for sure! poor old girl

many thanks

Yup certainly possible, in the same way as when turbo seals go, it smokes mainly off boost and standstill, ie: when the compressor wheel slows down and is no longer mixing smoke with exhaust gas, plus when driving small amounts of smoke could be coming out and mixing straight away with clean air.

Remove the 2 main hoses to the throttle bodies and lift up the accelerator linkage and look inside for traces of oil residue, handy time to clean these whilst your at it.

When you replaced the valves, did you do the 4 or 5 hoses with them ? as these can become blocked too.

When you done the turbo's i assume you removed the engine ? was there any oil residue in the cast turbo pipes that connect to your turbo's and then onto the cat pipes ?

Does the car drive really nice and smooth with no hesitation or feeling like it wants to cut out or stall ?

Snap mate. My car was brought of ebay and had the same problems as yours. The guy i got it from totally abused it. I had the turbos replaced and the pcv valves done but still no joy. Shes now having to have a full engine rebuild to get her running as she should.

Welcome to the nut house buddy and the wonderful world of owning a Z.

Hopefully it will just be the old oil burning off as stated. I pressume it is oil smoke (blue) as opposed to anything else.

Can't really help any more than that.

Has it been decatted?

Mine's smoked slightly at idle (after a couple of minutes) since I've owned it (over a year). Asking previous owners, I've worked out it's been doing it for about 5 years! Apparently it's probably caused by having a straight though 3" exhaust with two tiny silencers, which creates no back pressure at idle, allowing a drop of oil from the turbo rear oil seals. As soon as the cars moving again back pressure builds and the smoking stops. It doesn't bother me because it drives perfectly boosting at 1bar, but could be a problem if I had to sit in long traffic jams lol.

Buddy, i had engine probs last year. My car over boosted and i sent oil up into the plenums, fooked a piston and other stuff. When the exhaust was took off and tipped up over 1/2-1 ltr of oil came out meaning my cats had been saturated. It took a fair while to burn off residue oil. Also if any pipe to the PCV valves are leaking or blocked like Smithy said it will smoke. Good luck.

I don't think you'll find many of these cars for sale that don't have problems - some are nearly 20 years old now and that's slightly outside their warranty period!

They are probably on eBay for a reason.

After one of my turbo's failed followed by a cracked piston it dumped loads of oil through the system.

I replaced the PCV system twice and it was still the same.

It eventually cleared up on it's own after several hundred miles of driving so I can only assume it was oil hanging around and eventually buring off.

I'd run it steady for a 1000 miles and see if it goes away and maybe change the PCV valves again (you can just soak them in petrol to clean but they are only a few quid) as it may be they get clogged again.

If that doesn't cure it then it's turbo seal replacement but that's an engine out job.

You might as well get the turbo's refurbed at the same time otherwise they could fail a month later so all in it's not a cheap job.

I would be tempted to do a compression check just to rule out piston / ring damage. When its hot and running, if you removed the oil filler cap, is there any pressure / smoke coming out from the engine oil filler hole.
