Hi all, a quick question on the lights on my '92 imprt zed(modded). Its just failed its mot on the lights(rear fogs and side lights). Thats it fortunately!

The question is: on a zed, which are the sidelights, which are the mains? It's possible my light units aren't standard, but I've got one small round light and one larger sqaure one. If I put the lights on sidelights, nothing happens, If i put them on "normal" lights, the small round ones come on an d if i go full beam(on the stalk), the big sqaure ones come on and the round ones go out.

Its basically confusing the **** out of me!

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Tony, the sidelights are housed in the front fog lights in the bumper, it will be likely that either a bulb has gone or if both bulbs are gone then a fuse.

The round light is the dipped beam, the rectangular one is main beam and yes the dip does go off when main beam is on. A simple mod can change it so that both are on but you need to get it all working first lol.

Rear fog is a standard fail on jap cars that dont have them fitted as standard, for speed and ease just get a cheapy from halfords for the mot then take it off after.

HTH

cheers

Graham

or you could wire a switch into 1 side of your reverse lights and make it permanent

Aaah. i think I may have found the problem then! I don't have the normal bumper(is veilside), So i'm guessing whoever did it found a way round the problem. which is strange because it passed the MOT last time(with the previous owner). Do you know how people with a veilside kit get round this problem?

There are a couple of different copies of the Veilside that don't have the original sidelight/fog and/or indicator holes.

You will have to add a set of sidelights somehow to get it through the MOT.

I don't have sidelights in my Bomex Aero front bumper and it has sailed through the MOT last 2 years no questions asked and that was at 2 different MOT stations

Didn't you move the sidelights into your clear indicators?

That's what I'll be doing when I fit my foglight ducts soon.

Suppose it's all down to how thorough the MOT station is?

I'm sure you have to have sidelights for MOT.

Another issue is the fact that main beam goes off before full beam comes on.

I think that is officially a failure but it's the way the Z was designed.

Is that different on UK cars?

It's been discussed before if you do a search but I presume the reason Tony's failed is for lack of sidelights.

Hmm, theres obviously no "holes" for extra lights.. JJP, what happens when you turn your lights to "sidelights"?

Those clear sidelight replacement lenses have another bulb socket in them that can be used to relocate the sidelight from the fog light on Jap spec cars.

I think UK cars have a different sidelight arrangement.

This is what you should have:

Maybe you can buy those special indicator/sidelight units on their own from Z Centre?

Give Luke a call and see what he can do.

I'm sure it's easy enough to cut into the bumper and fit them if it's the same shape.

Have you just got indicators in there now??? Can only just see something in the scoops on your pic.

I guess if i've got to do that then ok, but it still seems strange that its got through 2 or 3 MOTs without the sidelights. Is there a wiring loom in the engine bay I can trace to see where the previous owner has terminated the sidelights?

.

No haven't moved into my clear indicators as fitted the clear indicators later. However, there are bulbs holes in my clear indicators which are currently just blanked with a sticker (as they came from Zcentre)

Haxman - as above as a result nothing happens when i switch my sidelights on, and it's gone through 3 MOTs

Chris, yep i have small round indicators in the "foglight" spot. JJP, where do you get your MOT done? ;-)

Miles away from you bud, it was 1st MOT'd in Birmingham, last year in Northampton and this year in Tamworth - not that it's going to help you bud.

I would go with what Chris said or contact luke at Zcentre he knows his Zed's and would be able to give you the best advice and possibly offer alternative solutions.

HTH ;)

I had to get some small spot lights and have them fitted into my veilside kit as it didnt have any sidelights, but it had passed all the other mots without them (go figure.)
