HICAS help please......

Hi all,

My Z failed its MOT last week on excessive play in the N/S HICAS ball joint. I was not happy with the decision as I had that one replaced last year following an "advisory" They also gave me an advisory on the O/S one.

Anyway, I took the car to another testing station and they reckon it is the inner joint this time - the one that goes into the rack.

I have bought replacement parts from MJP and left the car at the (second) garage to get it fixed but unfortunately they could not do it. They could not get the ball joint end out of the rack; not wanting to force it or do damage they were honest and admitted defeat after a couple of hours. Incidentally they aren't charging me either.....

So what do I do now - anyone know how to dismantle the damn thing or would any mechanically minded member (please!!) care to take the job on for me???

Thanks in advance

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I did mine :D

You have to have a spanner on each end of the rack, one will loosen off first, then you must undo the remaining one by gripping one end of the rack while using a spanner to undo the remaining one on the other side of the rack, sorry im not very good at explaning.

Hello mate If all fails I have a spare Hicas power cylinder I could sell you? Seems a little strange that it failed on that if its been replaced last year? Could be the cylinder itself??

One side will undo, then remove the spacer and lock nut from that end of the rack - this will allow you to get a spanner on the rack to stop it turning and then the other side will undo :)

See the following link and subsequent pages :)

Thanks for that Andy - I'll print that off and take it to the garage!

I only had the outer N/S ball joint replaced last year - which is why I took the car elswhere for a second opinion. The second MOT station took a closer look and decided the problem was with the N/S inner joint; the one that goes into the power cylinder.

Thanks for the offer though,

Richard

Just one other thought - would the HICAS eliminator bar fix the problem or would I still need the offending ball joint(s) replacing?

Richard:smw:

Nope you still need the inner and outer balljoints and rods etc
