My Power Steering keeps going heavy? I have checked the fluid and its good. Any ideas why this would happen please?

Do you have a MPH speed convector fitted to the speedo clocks, if so then its probably failing or has a bad connection..

No the clocks havent got a MPH converter on, So the steering is electrically controlled then?

Same problem here, checked fluid level etc... only really does it tho when its getting to temp. Found it wierd :(

Had the same problem a little while ago, usually when it was wet. Apparently there is a connector for the power to a solenoid on the power steering linkage that can get furry or break up. I say apparently because my problem fixed itself so I didn't go prodding around disturbing things! I'll try to find the right page in the service manual and post that in a mo...

Mine occasionally does this at very slow speeds, which is exactly when you need power steering !!!

mine did this, if the speedo kicked up to 20mph when you started the car all was good. if not the power steering was heavy till i got to 20mph. started doing it when i slowed down for junctions or parking.

2 scools of thought

1. dry solder joints on speedo

2. cheap kmph to mph converter

i cut out my converter and all is good, no idea what speed i'm doing but at least i can park in a car park

Thanks chaps. Splitfyr. Cheers for that link bud, I will get me Fluke out and check that voltage and see if there is a problem there. :D:bow::bow:

Funny the speedo should be mentioned. Since I gotr the car back the speedo hasnt been operating? I havent had any chance to drive it any distance until yesterday and it was only then that I noticed the steering problem. It is OK for about 10 mins or so driving then it gets heavy. I stop the car turn it off start it again and drive the steering is OK then again it gets heavy?

Thanks again chaps.

the speed signal goes to the speedo then on to the ecu

the ecu varies how heavy the power steering is, lightest at slow speeds, heavier at high speed.

if for some reason the ecu does not recieve a speed signal it defaults to going fast heavy mode as this is safer than the other way round.

a common reason for the ecu to not get the speed signal is a dry solder joint on the speedo although this will often be apparent in the speedo being intermitent especially at low speed.

that said, there is a considerable difference between heavy power steering and no power steering

IMO the steering is heavy. Not totally gone so yours and the others explainations sound good? If it had gone all together then it would be almost unmanagable I would have thought?
