I just went out to go pick up the missus from the station and the Zed won't start. I last drove it almost 2weeks ago and it drove fine (apart from slightly erratic idle which sometimes causes the engine to stall on hard breaking).

This time on turning the key, the dash lights up but then...nothing. Not even turning over. My initial thoughts are that it might be ignition related as all the lights/alarm/dash seems to be working normally so I wouldn't think it was a flat batt?

After resetting the immobiliser and trying a few more times I gave up and got out but when I set the alarm, instead of arming (with two hazard flashes), it flashes once and the lights stay on without the alarm arming!

What's going on??? What should I be checking? I managed to use another car tonight but I could really do with getting the Zed running by Sunday!

Any advice would be gratefully received!!

You say it isn't the battery but your best bet is to start there. Try testing it or jump starting if you don't have a tester.

Had a similar sounding problem when I left the side lights on. It dosen't take a large drop in the battery to stop it from turning the car over.

Could the immobiliser then be the problem?

Good luck with it.

Ok, fair point. I've got some jump cables so will try that first. I do have an immobiliser but it seems to be working as when the 'key' is inserted it turns frmo red to green...as usual...

Will let you know how it goes but can't check today..will have to do tomorrow now.

Thanks

Similar problem a while back it was my Starter Motor cable had snapped! Was dangling down and cut on something! Simple fix and all was fine! I would turn the key all the way and Not even a putt! Or could be the Starter motor itself :) Good Luck

another option is the ignition fuse blown, try swapping it with one of the others (abs) and see if that works

I had this exact thing once, just randomly happened 100 miles from home... I was begining to panick so as a last ditch effort i had my laptop with me and plugged it into my datascan/conzult lead. As it was still booting windows i thought id just give it one more try, and it started first time. So i came to the conclusion that it had picked up some sort of electrical/static charge that the laptop discharged (remember i hadnt even started windows by this time!)

yep agreed, battery, if its been stood for 2 weeks the chances are its drained with the cold weather, the cells have probably broke down, it should start from a jump but leave the jump leads on for abou 5 mins to give it a descent charge.

Thanks for all the help fellas! Turns out it was 'just the battery'! Feel a bit silly now for stressing out but the dodgy idle has been happening for a while and the Zed has been stood for much longer periods over the winter period without any problems....

...thanks again anyways!
