hi guys i'm new to the site but i was wondering if i could pick your brains!

i just bought a 91 300 turbo with a blown head gasket. the gent i bought it off started stripping it but was told if his head gasket went he would need to replace piston rings aswel!!! sounds a bit suss so i asked him if he'd boiled the knackers off it and he said no. has anybody else heard of replacing ring just cos a head gasket went. all comments greatly recieved.thanks batesy

if its just the gasket has gone, then the rings ect dont need replacing. you can never rely on what people tell you when it comes to selling their car though. where did you buy it from ? ebay.

Nope, no need to replace rings. Although as you have to remove engine is not a bad idea to replace them and the bottom end bearings at the same time too - Its does'nt cost much more to replace them and then at least the motor is nicely refreshed.

yeah got it from ebay thanks for the advice!

If possible do a compression check.

Trouble with that is that its going to be low becuase of the headgasket gone anyway.

You can do the dry then wet test to see what different it makes which can show condition of rings though.

don't forget to get some elastoplasts for all the scraping your knuckles are going to get.

Well worth doing the rings and bearings when HG fails. The rings will be worn anyway but don't forget to hone the bores ready for the new rings to cut themselves in. The bearings are highly advisable as IF coolant has got in the oil, they react to make an acid which eats the bearings. Do it once and do it right, will save a lot of hastle in the long term :)
