Hi,

Don't know if I am on the right track here but I noticed on my car suffered from hesitation/stumbling after it had been parked up after rain. I had my suspicions and thought that the seal between the headlight panel and the front bumper wasn't up to the job.

I wet the panel and noticed the apexi filter was wet when I took the headlight panel off, as it sits directly below that seal. Might try and rig up a temp seal to deflect water off and see how it goes!

Are you talking about to protect from water coming up from underneath or dripping down form above?

Does anyone know if this can be cured by switching to a filter other than apexi? All the posts I've seen regarding this issue have said apexi so I'm just wondering if it's filter specific.

HKS is worse than Apexi, didnt have any problems with my Blitz SUS though, just cant fit one under my current bumper :(

i've got a k&n off a DB9 which i ;)borrowed;) from work :D and had no problems with it

Is there any chance you could ;) borrow ;) a few more to see if it solves our issues...

Maybe because the filters that don't have the problem are metal based whereas the filter that do have problem have a cloth/sponge construction. The trade off you have is the apexi comes out best in the tests, it is easily cured by putting a small seal above it!

I wouldn't really recommend the k+n as the oil used in the filter contaminates the hot wire.

sorry fella i don't work for aston martin anymore i converted to a jag dealership for a managers position and the XKR's have crap panel filters on them.

are you sure its not the MAF cos they reeeally don't like water

Thats what I am saying the filter soaks up the water and affects the AFM

i've heard of a few people puttin them under a radiator over night to dry them out but it does'nt always work, ya could maybe give it a try?

It is not a continous problem only after rainfall, but I am thinking that it may be a factor contributing to the downfall of so many afms.

hmmm have you tried cleaning the connector to the afm, if its got that green stuff on the pins it actually absorbs water so it may be damp

Thanks for your good intentions snowy :)

The problem is not with my AFM or connectors but the seal between the headlight panel and the bumper.

I should really clarify the purpose of this thread as being a discussion and ways to cure it, and maybe highlighting a problem for others that are having a similiar problem and not for giving me alternative solutions for this hesititation :)

Lol I think Topless has been in the business of fixing Zeds long enough to know what the problem is. He's just trying to find a solution for all the other Zed owners out there with the same prob.

ah right i see what ya gettin at, if you unbolt the seal from the bottom of the nose panel put a couple of washers on each bolt and use some silicone sealer then re-attatch the seal this in turn will push the seal tight against the bumper when in place, i done it with my nismo nose and it aint leaked a bit in 2 years, sorry for the confusion topless

Yes mate, I've been using a Blitz Sus for 5 Years now with no problems... The underneath is completely open to the elements and i've got a vented headlight panel... Works great for me! Must be the stainless steel mesh not absorbing the water so much...

Hi Snowy,

I don't think that idea will do it as water sits in the recess and the seal isn't designed to keep water out on the bumper side. I am thinking a bit of plastic underneath would redirect the water away from the filter.

Jon I wouldn't like to change to blitz as this does not come out well in filter tests.

Easy fix

Make a splash guard out of metal or plastic. So if the water comes through the seal between the headlight panel and bumper it drips onto the guard instead of the filter. Water then runs down the gard and drips on the floor missing the filter.

Wet filter results in moisture entering the maf which will damage it, I replaced mine twice before making the gaurd.

Bouldy made one that looked like a pair of pants lol

yep i get ya, thats a pretty good idea, i know exactly what ya mean and it would be almost a freebie unless you already have some stuff lying around :)

Found the pic of boldy's effort.

Mine is pretty much the same but made from polished ally and is square not curved so it dont look pants! Just make it long enough so the end of it sits in the bumper and completly covers the filter. This way when the water runs down it, it wont drip onto the filter afterwards.

i use a cut up plastic plant pot to protect between bumper and headlight panel, works a treat ;)
