LOADS of problems - can anyone help with anything?

Hi all,

Firstly, let me apologise – I suspect this is going to be a long post! I have various different things wrong with my Zed and I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on any of it. I’m hunting through the forums and trying lots of different things here and there, but some direction from those of you with more experience than me would be greatly appreciated as I’m just not getting anywhere! I’ll try to let you know the symptoms I’m having, as I have a feeling most of it is related.

Stalling

I’ve got the common cutting out problem when pushing the clutch in rolling up to junctions etc. I also get the same problem if I’m just sitting stationary, in neutral and rev the engine. If I rev to about 4K and let the revs drop down again, it drops down too quickly, nearly stalls (sometimes does stall) then picks up again, usually at a slightly high idle, before gradually dropping down again (electronic idle compensating, I assume). So far I have tried cleaning the connector on my TPS, setting the TPS, cleaning my throttle bodies and taking off the pipe going into the IAA from the passenger side and spraying some brake cleaner in with the engine running. Still no joy. I’ll be doing the ‘tape on the cone filter’ fix to see if that helps this weekend.

Engine

I sometimes have a problem hitting safety boost under acceleration – it feels like I’ve hit the brakes. The other day, it happened at about 5K revs, and then kept happening at 5K revs no matter how slowly I accelerated. I got to work, and then drove home that evening with no problems at all. I can’t hear any detonation so I’m hoping it’s not the det sensor cutting boost…

The car also tends to hesitate when cold, and sometimes when hot and just feathering the throttle during low speed manoeuvres.

Heating

Is either off or bloody hot. I’ve had a ConZult test done, and all the sensors seem to be fine. However, it showed that one of the doors (air mix door I think) wasn’t moving – the angle displayed didn’t change. Is it going to be a faulty actuator (meaning entire dash out to replace…) or is there anything else I could check? The direction control and recirc work fine.

Clocks

Maybe once a week, my speedo decides it isn’t going to work. This is fixed by simply switching the engine off and back on again. Not really a problem, but maybe it ties in with the other issues? Also, my odometer has now decided that it isn’t going to work at all – something I want to get fixed very quickly as my mileage won’t be accurate! I have removed the clocks, cleaned every connection on the back (where the screws go through) and re-flowed the 6 or so solder points. Still no joy.

Other things that I have/have had wrong just for reference are: MAF sensor died and had to replace, HICAS doesn’t work (’95, so electronic – got code 11 which according to the service manual means replacing the control unit…), oil pressure gauge drops to 0 (goes up when cold, but then drops off – faulty sender I assume), had a bad connection on the temp sensor (the two pin one) and had it replaced, had a bad thermostat – replaced.

Sorry again for such an essay, but I’d be grateful if someone could give me any pointers - it's getting really disheartening that I can't ever get it running properly...

one of teh techies will be about lter but that seems to be a wholesale intermittent electrical fault.

Have you checked you battery and earth connections?

Stalling - Do you have dump valves? Have you checked for boost leaks? Try setting the base idle (see FAQ on here)

Engine - Have you done an ECU error code check? The ECU will store any fault codes for 50 starts after they are logged

Heating - More than likely the mode door connector is disconnected

Clocks - You need to remove the speedo from the cluster and reflow all the joints on that (about 20). The odometer is either a dead stepper motor or the grease s old and is gunking it up and needs renewing

Think thats it lol

Cheers,

Andy

deve9uk - earthing should be ok - forgot to mention that I installed an earthing kit to be on the safe side!

Paul Thompson/andyduff - yep, checked for codes and got a 55...

andyduff - yes, I do have dump valves, apexi ones I believe. Will check for vaccuum leaks as suggested (I've got a guy at work bringing me a pump in soon) and will set base idle. Just been struggling to get to the yellow connector and get it off because of the metal clip/cage round it...

I've no idea where to look for the mode door connector, but I'll see what the service manual can tell me and have a look!

Clocks - no problem, I'll have a look. I didn't think it was supposed to be a good idea to take them apart though?

Cheers guys :)
