Water leak

I was driving home from work yesterday and noticed the temp gauge going up just as I was getting home.

I have checked the coolant level today with the engine cold and it was empty, so I filled it up and then heard it coming straight out. It was emptying straight out, a constant flow onto the drive, I have not had chance to get under it and have a proper look yet, but from looking above the engine near the dip stick I could see it leaking from a pipe near the bottom of the engine.

Has anyone got any idea which pipe it might be, or is there something else in that area which might be leaking?

It sounds like a turbo water hose in that area. They're a real pain to get to to replace.

It's unusual to hear it pouring out from there though when filling.

It's more likely to be a radiator bottom hose or something but I can't see how the water would run towards the back of the car.

I have been looking on other threads and from the area it looks like it might be leaking it could be the turbo water hose, just looked on Z1's site I think it is part 14056-40P14.

What is the main problem fitting a new hose? Can it be done with the engine still in?

I am not going to be able to do any work on it till Thursday so just trying to get some ideas.

It depends exactly which one it is that's gone.

You might be able to do it from under the car but it's very cramped.

Some of the hoses that run round the back of the engine are almost impossible to get to with the engine in.

I have had a look at the car today and the pipe I could see leaking was an overflow for the expansion bottle.

I had been filling it by the expansion bottle, I have checked other threads and it appeared that I should check the coolant level by removing the rad cap and if you could see coolant then it was ok.

I could not see any coolant in mine, so I topped it up until I could see some and then checked for leaks again, this time it has a slower drip, it appears to be dripping below the cam belt area, so I guess this is going to be the water pump leaking??

Either the water pump or there are 2 small pipes that join the big metal water pipes from the radiator to the block/pump.

They are a really common failure and only cost a couple of quid each.

Either way it needs the cam covers off so might be worth buying a 60K service kit and doing it at the same time if it's not been done?
