First off, if a cat is fitted to your car from new. Is it leagle to do away with it? Fanncy getting rid and replace with SS down pipes without cats. Saw add for them size was 2.3/8th inch diam for standard . Sounds about right before I crawll underneath, and would I find a difference in perfofmance? because I'm not into a lot of noise just to get noticed. And what's a fair price for this conversion. The car is a 1996 TT SWB

If your car was registered after 1st August 1992 you must have the Cat present and working for the MoT. Previously registered cars can have the Cat permanently removed. ;)

because my car was imported from Japan March 2007. Would that make a difference. And if the boys in blue stopped you could they make any fuss if I diddn't have one fitted.

no. it goes on the year of manufacture. its only vehicles manufactured pre aug 1st 1992 that you can legally remove the cat, or should say registered.

So let me get this right. If I said to my friedley garage. Please fit my cats for the MOT and then take them off again. That would be ok. Cops not a problem?

unless you got pulled into an on road test place which normally test the arctic's then they wouldn't even know.

Shouldn't be a problem, a lot of people do that. You do run a high risk of turbo failure if you decat so I don't suggest doing it unless you have the funds to replace them should they go.

Except in the case of the 300zx, whereas it is not listed in the Emissions database so is tested for mot as a non-cat equipped car.

After 95 the car must be tested as a Cat equipped vehicle wether it appears in database or not.

- pre95 for the 300zx there is no requirement for a Cat for Mot.

Thanks forr the info. Not sure what to do since Glen mentioned about the risk to the turbos.

Unfortunately mate you get a lot of bad advice on this subject and it is a can of worms to be honest. At the end of the day the people you say 'go for it' aren't the ones forking out £1500+ to sort your car out once it starts smoking. The car will run a lot better and you get some noticeable power gains decatting but I'd only do it if you were considering doing the turbos at the same time. I think JoelyP on this site has unfortunately just learnt the hard way on this subject.

does anyone know the problem of the turbo failure, is it dew to over boosting or turbo over heating...!
