right ive had and got a couple of problems with my zx non turbo,

ill start at the simplest first, any help would be great, here goes.

 

1, when i have the heaters set to 40 no heat comes from any of the blowers apart from the ones at your feet, but it doest blow that much or that hot, all the others are cold.

 

is this normal? i had to take it off the road over winter becauseit was just to cold in there.

 

2, how do you get the cruise control to work?

 

ive tried everthing, i even tryed sweet talking her, but that didnt help

 

and heres the biggy and i feel so ashamed

 

3, one of my coilpacks went, so i was only running 5 pots, now i know i shouldnt have driven it till i found some but i couldnt help it.

 

i went a steady 40-50, and to top it all off whilst it was like that i fitted a straight through stainless twin pipes, and havnt gotten to test it yet.

after a month of it spluttering, theres a knocking, coming from the bank thats been spluttering, the passenger side.

the knocking gets faster when you rev it slightly, so i took it straight off the road, and that where its stayed since november.

 

do you have an idea as to what i could be?

i hope its something simple like say a cam bearing.

 

im driveing my vectra sri at the mo and its horrible, i miss my baby.

Firstly welcome to the club, secondly wow a Z on Uist.

 

Your first problem could be down to someone previously by-passing the the heater core due to a leak, a blocked core or even an air lock in the system.

Is the engine warming up all right because if that dont neither will your heater.

 

Cruise control ..... :o its that long since ive driven my Z I cant remember how to set the cruise, if it aint switching on it could be something as simple as a fuse. What are wanting cruise control on Uist for anyway :D

 

And your right the last one is the biggy. Its possibly serious. Is it a heavy knock or more a tapping from the top end, if its the latter its possibly a sticky lifter and is quite common, my car does it until its warmed up.

 

But to be honest if youve been running with a misfire chances are that theres a lot of fuel in the oil and may have damaged the bearings and untold other components. Check the dipstick find out what the oil is like and see if it

smells of petrol, if it does try an oil change you may be lucky but i doubt it.

try setting the heater to a easily reachable temp like 28 degrees and see if that works,

cruise control could be microswitch related, does the cruise light still come on when you switch it on

 

the final one does sound serious and without someone seeing or hearing the situation then good advice will be hard to come by.

ive tried the heater on all different settings but never got lucky.

yes the temp is fine on the car also, i thought about the thermostat but all seems ok from that end.

 

the knock/tapping comes in the warmer the car gets, i gave it a service just before the knocking started, and im always checking the oil and it does smell of petrol.

i gave it a service in the hope it might not need coil packs, yeh just my luck ha

 

i miss the car it just makes you feel special when driveing them, i have it bad.

what oil do they actually run on? i just popped to the garage and asked for oil for it, so i might not have put the right oil in?

 

i start work on the car in a few weeks, just waiting for space in a huge shed ive been told i can use, new bumper, side skirts, spoiler, respray, brakes, wheels etc

 

i baught it off a guy in glasgow, he was selling it on ebay, and told me it was perfect, but when i got there, the tyre was flat, the power steering didnt work the discs where warped the bumpers had chips in them the spoiler paint was flakeing off, he also told me the interior was nice but, it had a huge hole in the dash the steering wheel looked like a dog had chewed it, it looked like cr@p, but then he started it, and i handed him the envolope with the £1230 and took it lol, it was the sound ahhhh

 

you might know him, hes a foreign guy with a weird name, poscetzelscy or something like that, hes got a gold pug 106gti now.

Not sure I can be of much help but there are several connection under the dash that control the heating. Perhaps these have come undone.

 

Don't have cruise control so don't know.

 

Would suggest you get the missfire and tapping sorted before you go too far with sorting other stuff.

 

As you go to north yorkshire it may be worth calling in to see duffer. He will be your man.

about the only place you can use cruise control would be on the causeway lol, where abouts in Uist you from m8, I was based in Balivanich for a couple of years in the late 90`s

FFS dont be tempted driving it with an engine knock to see Duffers, because if it is serious by the time Andy gets a look at it the engine will probably be scrap.

 

Get it into a local garage, sure they will know next to nothing about a Z but they should be able to tell the difference between a tappet and a big end knock. You say the noise gets worse the warmer the engine gets, to me that sounds bad.... but get a garage to look at it to get there opinion.

Yeah didn't mean take it with you but nip in and have a word, describe the noise etc. He may have a quick fix. Otherwise yes get the misfire fixed first.

cruise is normally straight forward to figure out so must be somethin wrong with yours. Yeah if anything knocks dont drive you will learn that one on any car. And the coil packs you can pick up at a fairly decent price so when it needs it do it or its gonna cost way more in the long run.

well its been parked up now for ages, the garages over here wont even look at it, but im not fussed most of them dont know one end of a spanner from the other.

 

i was in mclennans garage the other day, and one of the macs was asking another what a multi meter was lmao

 

hey mark, im in ford terrace, creagorry right next to the causway hehe, i really want it back on the road for summer.

im going to be stripping the engine down, but, i was hopeing i could get soem idijas from you guys first.

if its kanucked im still going to do the body, ill have to buy a new engine, or visit one of your houses whilst you sleep, lmao

 

 

tell you what, would it be easyer if i tubed a vid of the noise for you all to listen to?

i havnt started the car since november, i didnt want torisk it, but i suppose a little tick over wont harm her, and would be nice to hear her shout again.

Lol, ive done this many times, then i usually start swearing at her and waving big metal bars at her.

 

As for the cruise control, it should work at above 35-40 mph. it could be the cable is either too tight or loose or just a fuse.? did it work before?

 

Have you sorted the misfire out, if not it could be a stuck injector, hence the smell of fuel. If its ok, is it a tappet noise.

Stupid question, when was oil changed last? as on mine one tappet was making a racket, but fixed itself after new oil and an engine flush.

Cruise control come's in at 43mph on mine, so try and get to 50 mph then you know for sure that it should work.

stu, i havnt sorted it out yet, i need to wait for some space in a shed its going in.

it wont fit in any of the garages over here its too low.

i gave it a service about 2 weeks before took it off the road.

ive tried the cruise control at all speeds, but saying that though, the horn doesnt work either,hmm.

 

theres more not working than there is working on this thing, but i love her.

i havnt had her that long, only about 6-7 months

and i was too busy building up my 4x4 to start work on the z :(

 

snowygt: dont worry bud i intent to go to as many shows, cruises, meets and everything, just as soon as i get her to all your standards.

its a bit embarrasing at the mo, and people think ive let it slip, but they dont think hhmm maybe he baught it like that.
