This weekend I am going to tint my rear lights black. Can anyone give me a walk-thru of how to remove the rear lgihts from the car?

Thanks

Fold carpet back and unbolt and remove all the trim in the boot, then just look for the bolts holding the lights in, once you have unscrewed them, just pry them away with a knife gently as they are stuck in with horrible black stuff. Reverse the process to refit. HTH.

Sharpy - what are you using to tint them? And are they 99-spec currently or the classic orange?

Also, a general question re light removal, what do you seal the light units up with after having opened up all the 'black stuff'? Surely that was some kind of sealant, without which after refitting, mooisture would seep in?

Just stick them back in, the black stuff is lovely and just re-seals. HTH

I found a tutorial on using the tinting film? is this a bad idea? an tinting advice appreciated!

its the tinting SPRAY you need, remove lights and clean properly with white spirits, then wet and dry, clean again, apply 1 thin coat at a time, once you have them as dark as you need them (mine got 4 coats), wet and dry them again and apply clear laquer, again about 3-4 coats allowing to dry between coats and the simply wet and dry 1 last time and buff to a shiney finish with some G3 cutting compound

Ah, the film doesnt work then!! Not too handy with the old "Spray" cans, I dont seem to have the knack!!! Any advice?

film is for the inside of window glass, just follow the instructions above, if you don;t like the finish you just use cellulose thinners to remove it but bare in mind, once you put the laquer on thats it, its on to stay so it must be removed before the laquer, trust me, if you can, get some perspex and have a practice its dead easy.

The film is almost impossible to do tidily due to the small raised section on the upper centre of the light unit. I would recommend spray tint however you may need to change bulbs to accommodate the loss of rear light.

did'nt have to change any bulbs on mine and its past MOT's but it depends on how dark you do it.

Whats the best spray paint method? Left to right? In straight lines? How long does it take to do a GOOD job? Where can I get the tint spray from? Motorworld? Will I need more than one tin??

1 tin would be enough, remember, thin layers, motorworld do sell it, straight lines are fine, but if you get any runs DONT try and wipe it off, wait til its dry and sand it out with wet and dry, and i done mine in about 4-5 hours with drying time in between for plenty of coffee breaks, lol, and leave them under a radiator over night

its about £12 per tin and to avoid runs just spray from about 12" away that way its getting the light mist effect which is what you want
