You're likely to get done for around 22% on the total value (ie including shipping), then an admin fee which can be £10-15.

So id be looking at another £115 on top of my order... bugger!

Ive always been told the Import duty is charged on the amount excluding shipping.

 

So my mate at UPS says anyway :)

I spent about £160 (including postage from US) and duty taxes were 30 pounds

I recently bought $6900 worth of kit from Z1 and only paid £305 but I think I might just have been lucky

No, you're right. From the HMRC website:

 

3.1 Value for import VAT

 

General

 

The value for VAT of imported goods is their customs value, determined according to the customs rules described in Notice 252: Valuation of imported goods for customs purposes, VAT and trade statistics, plus, if not already included in the price:

 

* all incidental expenses such as commission, packing, transport and insurance costs incurred up to the goods’ first destination in the UK; plus

* all such incidental expenses where they result from transport to a further place of destination in the EC if that place is known at the time of importation; plus

* any customs duty or levy payable on importation into the UK; plus

* any excise duty or other charges payable on importation into the UK (except the VAT itself).

 

So yes - duty on the goods, VAT on top of the duty *and* goods *and* delivery cost.

 

 

Working out the duty required is not easy, since you basically have to phone up the HMRC to find out the rate of duty unless you have access to the list of classification codes and rates.

 

The easiest way is to use a simple 22% like Andy says, or ~8% duty on the goods + 17.5% VAT on the goods, duty and delivery. 8% will be a little high for most things, but best to air on the side of caution.

I spent $3490 with AMZPerformance and I only paid £127 in duties ;)
