Dunno but vista sucks balls, I have it and hate it gimme XP back

Well atm I have a conflict on mine stopping me playing COD 4 Online....nearly 1k for a pc for gaming and it dont work. My son's playing it online without any problem with his XP system. I am just trying to update the graphics card drivers but they ask 32 bit or 64 bit....ffs why is nothing simple.

Cheers John

i would say, go to control panel, then "system and maintainence" then system, and it should say if its 32 or 64 bit :)

Clicky

Find the picture and make it bigger... might help :D

I dont have system and maintenance....I only have 'System'....fookin pc's I enjoy messing about with them but when this shit happens its fookin typical.

Vista has loads of issues running games, which is ironic as its ment to be for games, as such.

Try the run as admin thing that normaly solves alot of problems

If not right click the icon go to properties, click the tab at the top that says "Compatability"

and tick the box that says "run this programe in compatability mode for XP service pack2"

Other then that check firewall settings?

Pete

Have tried running as administrator, still the same, I have tried online help through the game publishers. They think its the driver for the graphics card. I prefer XP to be honest but its like everything new full of glitches. Firewall is off atm.

;) no problemo! lol

Vista is just new... everyone hated XP when it came out. stated that 9x was far superiour... Vista will come good in 6 months or so... when people are used to it.

Have you always had vista john? or have you just upgraded?

I've had Vista since it was a beta release and love it to death. Currently running Vista X64 on this machine and Vista 32 on less powerful computers around the house.

Main difference between the two versions (X64 and x32) relates to the fact that X64 is meant to be run on dual or quad core processors. Vista 32 will operate fine on a dual core but x64 is just a little bit faster and smoother. Makes better use of the processes. There is a shortage of drivers for x64 though and many software manufacturers have yet to catch up or get their finger out in developing them. Zonealarm being a major bug bear of mine.

I started running X64 a year ago and in all that time I have had TWO system crashes which ran fine with system restore. If your machine is fast enough, go for X64 but if you are worried about compatibility (especially virus checkers and firewalls) and drivers, use the 32 bit. Unless you are a power user you won't really notice the difference.

Chris its a pc I bought for gaming for the likes of COD 4. The machine plays the game without any problem its just when I try and play it online that it spits oot the dummy.

Ah yeah, I remember now. We've talked about this before. Hmm, just had a thought what mainboard is in that machine? ((im actually interested in its chip set and network cards...) Also one other thought do you have any dongled software, (i.e hardware lockd software on that pc? i doubt it but its another slim possibility))

I remember seeing somthing like this with a machine (no idea what chipset it was) but particular software communicating over a network refused to run when certain hardware/drivers were in use.

Hi Chris

I have looked in some of the forums on the net and a lot of the replies relate to onboard sound card issues. I never took the soundblaster card only the basic sound system so am gonna mess about with the drivers. My son is upstairs playing it on XP without any problem....fookin typical.

With regards motherboards am not sure.

Cheers John

hmm right, might be an idea to disable the sound in the bios, and then try it. If that cures it (altho no sound) then you've got your answer, then time to look for some drivers/bios update that makes it work.

Incidently, what is your onboard sound?

Well that flew right over my head there lol. The quote from Dell states "Audio Integrated HDA7.1 Dolby Digital Capability" so am guessing its on the motherboard.

I will look up the Dell site and see exactly what it says

It Doesnt say anything other than what I have in my previous reply. I think I might phone them tomorrow and ask for a price for the uprated card and see if that makes a difference. I wanted surround sound eventually so its worth a try.

thats the dell download site for your machine, i firmly suggest you update your bios for one. An issue of a download classed as "Urgent" is normally a sign of "we ****ed up... etc" Only released a month ago so its unlike your PC has that... Give it a try :)
