This may seem like a stupid question but how do you know if your cars deting or not?

Yep, I've had this problem all summer.

Car is not completly overheating, but temp guage goes up 3/4 way. If I turn the heating up full it drops back again, this only really happens when I'm stuck in heavy traffic and might have something to do with the fact that the car is constantly idleing at 2000rpm!.

Car also occasionally goes into safety boost on hot days, but usually when I'm NOT boosting, wierd.....

get your timing checked as mine was running 19% when i checked mine. sorted all of the above out straight away, and use optimax where possible.

I assume you have checked your coolent level and that the electric fan is operating correctly too!

The guage really should not go over half way. Ash from TwinTurbo.net found that the center point on the guage is not an exact reading but a wide temperature range that represents the operating range when he hooked his car computer up to measure the temperature. So your guage should always be in the middle, if it does go above or below the middle then you are outside the operating range.

Here is one post on tt.net but I remember reading others http://www.twinturbo.net/cgi-bin/ttnet_viewmsg.pl?forum=main&msg_id=726921&words=temp::guage::middle

Yep, I'd agree with that. On the Techtom the temp can rise 15 deg C and yet the gauge still points to the middle. Have yet to establish at what temp it suddenly shoots up (and hopefully I never will!).

The Standard Temp gauge can definitely not be trusted!

Mine was sitting dead center while the engine was frying – if the coolant level drops enough (eg leaking heater matrix) the sensor is sitting in air hence the false reading. It cost me an engine so I now have a secondary gauge to monitor the under bonnet temp.

The TTnet guys say the needle does not move above the middle until 215F and that normal running temp is aroun 180F. If I remember the conversion correcttly (F -32 / 1.6) then that equates to 114.4C and 92.5.

I have also read about a 15 degree remp increase after a hard run.

Do those numbers agree with your readings Andy?

my engine temp. always sits just below indicated halfway mark, although it does rise by a small amount when bogged down in traffic.

My zed does not like firing up if I go for a lunchtime trip. It takes several turns before it roars into life??.

Pretty close I reckon, ambient temp will also play a big part. I have one of those handheld infared thermometers and that reckons the manifold onto which the temp sender is mounted is just a few degrees hotter than the ECU/Techtom reports, so I'd say it's fairly accurate.

I found the same problems as brian- ie sitting in traffic and my car was overheating.

Coolant levels etc are ok and its not leeking. One thing that i thought it could be is the seal on the thermostat as this would let air into the system and therefore lower the boiling point of the coolant. Or maybe my rad needs flushing?

Anyway hopefully this week i should have it sorted along with new pcv'S (another wonderful job!!!) just in time for.......................................oh er..........winter!!! DARN!!

If you're overheating whilst sitting in traffic then you should be checking whether the fans are working correctly.

You can tell by the noise - it's a difficult one to describe but a bit like some really light ball bearings shaking around inside your cylinders. It doesn't sound at all damaging but is !

If you don't know the sound it's worth having a listen on someone who's car is detting (and is still prepared to run it!).

Warren's is usually a safe bet smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
