got a bottom end rattle think it is the crank shells onlay when you start it first thing in the morning could it be anything else if not how hard is it to fix do you have to take the engiene out or can you just drop the sump out

Featured Replies

you say it has bottom end rattle? does it filter out up the revs? What kinda noise is it making? and at aprox what rpm?

just when you start it when it ticks over ais a tapping noise only lasts for 3 4 seconds

More than likely just the hydraulic lifters. Over time the one-way valve clogs and the lifters take a few seconds to 'jack out' with oil pressure.....

In short, probably nothing to worry about. If its a knock noise then yes I'd take out a second mortgage.......

it only does it when you start it first thing in the morning and the then goes away in seconds and nothing when you rev

takes time for the oil to travel to the top of the engine.

like dufman said hes the guru ;)

Forget doing the shells, if they were gone you'd have a hard knocking noise and you'd probably have a dead engine by now. But yes, the shells ARE hard to do - its not so much the shells, its more the fact that 99% of the time the crank also has to come out to be ground/polished. The VG30 doesn't have the hardest of cranks and is very easily damaged if the big ends go.

If the noise is disappearing after 2-3 seconds and its more of a tick, then its the lifters, ie don't worry about it its a common problem......
