Ok, i've mentioned that i'm having major traction issues with the power it's now running.

I've looked at the used alloys i bought and to my surprise they are 10's on the rear which i can't believe as they are currently runnig 255's so luckly i will get a decent grip with the right tyres

The fronts are 17x8jj and the rears 17x10jj which are pretty big and currently have 255's on them.

Not many manufactures make tyres over 265 for a 17" and i need as much traction as possible.

Toyo go upto 265/40/17

Verdestein Ultrac 275/40/17 and a cheaper option Falken FK452 275/40/17

Kumho ECSTA Sport 285/40/17 cheaper than all above.

Initially i would go for the largest being the Kumho but just because they are bigger don't mean they will provide more grip as they could be crap, Toyo i would get if they were bigger and Verdestein are meant to be good but very expensive as for the Falken they are fairly priced but not sure what they are like as a tyre.

And what about the fronts? stick to what's currently on there? 225/45/17 or go for a 235?

Also what about the profiles? would a different profile be better instead of 45 front and 40 rear?

As much info and help as possible please as it's currently dangerous to drive, spinning in 4th/5th is scary

Search the forum for the falkens.....very popular, great reviews !! I would have them over all your other options.

Interesting, wasn't expecting that. They are very reasonably priced also.

Will have a read on them then thanks.

yep i always get the falkens, great all round tyre, very similar to the toyo, infact they come out of the same factory ;)

Legrath and aswell they do them in the sizes i may need for the front, both a 235 and a 225.

shall i stick with a 225 for the front or get a 235? these are 8" rims on the front.

Also stick with the current profiles 45 front and 40 rear?

hankooks aint bad i had them on my last car and they were great and lasted ages

hankooks and falkens are both budget tyres and from my experience are ok for all round driving but you cant push them, wet or dry, i've been in the trade for 11 years now and if you want to use your car to its full potential, then you need to get decent boots on your car.

Sounds like you've been underselling the falkens to your customers.

Cant comment on the Hankooks, but the Falken 452's are an extremly popular and well regarded high perforamance tyre..despite its low price. Comparable if not better than the Goodyear F1's I replaced them with, and I know a lot of the guys who like to weekend track there cars have been swapping from the F1's to the 452's and not just becuase of the abilites but also because they cope with shoulder scrub better as they have a harder inner shoulder edge designed for camber alignment changes on the track.

I've driven a lot of Z32's with differnet tyres, many somewhat dangerous, and these are not comparable to any "budget" tyres.

make your own mind up jaffa, your always going to get a difference in opinion on these forums, there is no right and wrong, just personal judgment, but both of those tyres are released as budget tyres, just like the old toyo proxes t1s, which has now been replaced by the px4, and are equally good for budgets. and good year f1's are nothing to be compared to.

what offset are the rears, that will dictate how wide a tire you can use without rubbing.

Also the profile should be in relation to the width to keep the same overall height.

yeah you have to make sure you dont adjust the rolling radius too much, otherwise you will changing the way the car is geared and also your speedometer will not read correctly, As you have already found out on 17" there is only a certain size you can go upto unless you buy specialist tyres, if you go to 255/265 on rear then your profile should be at 40%, on the fronts you can go 225 or 235 and stick to 45%, this will keep everything within tolerance.

I have no idea what offset they are, how would i find that out.

Is it me or is buying tyres complicated?

Ok i've decided to go for the Falkens but now i'm not 100% sure what size to get, the on sure is the last part e.g. for a 17" rim lol.

Goodyear F1 have always been the one of the top rated Perfomance tyre choices and by far the most popular.

Would welcome some suggestions from somebody in the tyre trade though.

I use Falkens, have done for years. But then I am not a "tyre snob", I buy what I think does the job.

My mate was going on about that the higher end Kuhmo's are very good.

Is this true or are they poop?

He is talking about the Ecsta Sport range.

The likes of VW fit Kumho as original equipment so I can see no way they are no good as there is too much risk of law suites if they fit a poor tyre and people crash.

  • Author

Really?? mmm... that's interesting as the Kuhmo is allot cheaper and they go upto 285 on a 17" rim.

Just check the Treadwear number of whatever you are buying. Low numbers indicate poor wear rates but high grip factor. Eg Kuhmo V70 track type tyres are 125.

High treadwear numbers indicate a low wear/high mileage tyre.

The downside of this is no grip. I have seen tyres withnumbers like 320.....AVOID

My Tyres do a wear/grip table from most tyres, inc the ones in question here, you can compare different tyres to give you an idea.

I would have to recommend staying away from the Kuhmo's. I had these before I fit Falken 452's and they were crap, spining and sliding everywhere and I have an N/A! I wanted Bridgstone S1's or S2's but the tyre fitter I use did not have them in stock so I went for the 452's which I am very happy with.

Must admit to thinking why (if the size is available) anyone would need a better tyre than a 452 Falken, from a cost/grip/wear point of view. Just my thoughts.

Cool ok point taken, Falken 452's it is.

i'm going to get a 275 for the rear and a 235 for the front but not sure what profile to get, shall i stick with the 40 rear and 45 front or go for 40 all round?

Going to order early next week.
