I have just done an ecu check when it was cold and it came up with code 13 & 34. 13 is the coolant sensor and 34 is the detonation sensor.

After going up the road and warming it up I checked it again. The coolant sensor has gone but the detonation sensor is still there. Is it something to worry about, because it is in the middle of the engine and not the easiest thing to get to. Will this cause a hesitation.

It'll retard your timing (so I've heard). My ECU gives the same code, but the sensor is fine (checked with multimeter) - I'm worried about my wiring now, 'cos the engine runs like a dog :-(

Hi,

Get the same thing on my ECU. Checked with multimeter and wiring sounds sus. Car runs ok no audible detonation.

My car is UK spec I was wondering if there is anything different between UK and Import regarding the code 34 issue.

being the forum stunt driver and not the techy bod that some of you are i was wondering how you all perform these ecu diags are they as easy as you all make out

Hello guys,

I'll put money on dodgy connection on the Temp sensor, Spray with contact cleaner.

The Det Sensor is a nasty kettle of fish right down the back of the engine, nigh on impossible to change unless Mr Fantastic is your mechanic. Needs the engine removing if it is faulty.

There are a few things that cause this and the problem is tricky to isolate, Try a search on tt.net, Try to have a Run with a Consult or Techtom in the car and finally if it is deffinatly the sensor, then bypass (www.zhome.com) or replace.

Henri le Hir is the man that knows all about this, give him a mail if he doesn't reply to the thread.

The error codes will put the car in safety boost (7psi) which will result in poor performance.

Correction. (I hope!)

Error code 34 is either a fault in the sensor or the wiring between the sensor and the ECU. Having a code 34 does not automatically place the car into safety mode or/and retard the timing. It did not with mine! It just means that it can no longer detect detonation.

I had an error code 34 but the circuit is now bypassed as explained in the writeup on TT.net. There was no difference.

Andy,

I agree with you analysis of the code 34 problem.

Interesting my car did not experience the "safety boost" problem that people talk about, was still running 12 psi.

I have boost jets fitted so I was not sure if they defeat the safety boost feature plus my car is UK spec.

Could not find a 1 meg ohm restistor for the bypass, but if it makes no difference then I might not bother.

Has anyone here got an ECU checking kit!

and if so will they be bringing it to the 1st of April meet, Im sure a lot of us will be suprised at what it has to say on some cars.

harve.

Having a code 34 does not

automatically place the car into safety mode or/and retard the timing.

Sorry, but that's completely incorrect.

If you HAVE a code 34 condition, the car WILL retard the timing under load, and will TRY to lower the boost on ANY car. If your car is fitted with bleed valves, or boost controller, the boost is likely NOT to be reduced, but the timing WILL BE modified.

Additionally, do not mix betweed HAVING a code 34 condition, and HAVING a code 34 ERROR logged into the computer.

Damm, I should start marketing that item...

any paper clip, or electrical wire is a perfect "ECU checking kit!"

Zee you
