Hi guys, test drove another twin turbo today that was down on power,it felt more like a 1.0 than a3.0!

When i put my foot down the boost gauge went from -14 to 0 but didnt go above into the + side.

Ive done searches on here and if it was in safety boost id still get a + reading on the gauge,or would i?

The car is a mint 94 uk spec with dealer history, the seller is prepared to drop the price considerably which has rang a few alarm bells!

Any ideas if its in safety boost,or if its a more serious problem?

not safety boost.

a pipe or something has come off or there is a serious leak.

look around the intercoolers also.

0 boost normally means seized turbo

yep, deffo sounds like a siezed turbo, when mine went I couldn't believe it was a 3 litre sports car :(

And sounds like he knows it!! How much is he willing to drop the price by?

Vijay

if its siezed it should feel like the exhaust is blocked see if theres any air coming out of the exhausts put your hand over both then u can see which one is poopendaffed:).

anyway u wont wanna buy a zed with blown turbos anyhow :)

i can guarantee if it does not go past o its seized ive got a 1992 grey one parked up here runs and drives fine no smoke equal back pressure out the exhaust on tick over just no boost and still as fast as a na

Well, ive just spoke to him, and said seized turbos,he thinks its knock sensor, hed take 1600 for a 94 uk with leather,83k on the clock, pretty nice condition really, good paint not rust, just a shame really, how much would turbos be?

nothing to do with knock sensor. Looking at £6-700 labour and I think about another grand for uprated turbos ;) What was his original asking price?

£2500,so if i spent 1k on it,it would owe me 2500 ish still, mmmnot sure really, ive got zedworld 2 miles from me,so getting it done would be ok,just if theres anything else wrong with it!

Have you spoken to Jeff at Zedworld? Might be an idea to see if he knows of any nice example that might be for sale, maybe someones who he's serviced :)

Vijay

Deffo not knock sensor and deffo a seized turbo! If you can get £2k off it then go for it but if not walk away. What condition are the sills in? Have a good look because quite often quick bodge jobs are done just to get a sale ;)

not 100% seized turbo. Had it before on another persons zed, naturally presumed it was seized tubs, then amazingly found a small vacumn pipe off that was caussing zero boost. Ended up being a free 2 min job instead of a £1500 job.

Have also seen one with same problem, and it was seized tub...from oil starvation...and they unseized themselves during a drive and the impellors tore themselves from the bearings ending in a lot of smoke and rattles.

LOL a leak that big should give a nice fine whistling noise though

I guess it could be either a sieze turbo or a big old vaccum leak.

However for a vaccum leak it's unusal or coinsidental that it would not go above 0. Usually you loose a bit or allot but it shold effect the whole range from - to +.

My money is on Sieze tub as when my passenger side turbo spindle decided to try and break free, I also couldn't get above 0 psi. The blades on the tub were scraping the inner casing and when I took the engine out and the tubs off there were large chunks missing from the blade. This is the reason I had to strip the entire engine as I wasn't sure exactly where the missing metal from the tubs had gone. Didn't scratch the bore but decided wheil it was out I may as well upgrade everything and rebuild anyway.

Are you getting any smoke out the back ?. If so is it a blue grey colour ?.

Any noise when you try and go into boost (sounds like a bag of nail rattling under the bonnet) ?

Anything else you noticed different ?

absolutely, although suprisngly in this case was not that noticable and it was only a small vacumn hose rather than one of the IC pipes loose. Was very suprised to discover.

Thats what i said could just be vacume loose or maybe an intercooler broken as i saw a previous post where the same thing was occuring and it turned out to be the intercooler damaged. but he could hear a whistle noise dont know if this guy can tho.

but seen as the trader has dropped the price that much it probably is a siezed turbo but best to just check minor things first.

Give over. A knackered NA maybe. A Good NA is very sprightly and only 45 HP down on a TT and because it has a high compression engine instead of the turbos low compression TT engine and lower gearing 0 to 60 is a bit quicker and still zings up to 130+

Only driven an NA once (ChrissyP's) and was testing the gearbox, was really suprprised how quick they are through the first few gears :)

Vijay

at the end of the day when you're buying a car you don't know, you have to assume the worst and the price has to refelect that ;)

Vijay

I've never experience a sieze turbo and the only big vacume leak i've experience was Via a sticking dump valve. So it held presure up to 2500 rpm and then just let go. It felt like a 40 hp car, but you could hear the leak quite loudly.

Dunk300zx is the man to ask about siezed turbos. I've got his sieze one in my garage, nasty.

When I fitted my greddy SMIC's I left two bolts out of each one.

So I had 4 x 8mm holes. Boost was set at 14psi and dropped to 9psi, but still went over 0. That's a huge boost leak but still had some boost.

may be you would like to see in your na if you ever turn up to a meeting :p

Other give away of a seized turbo is that if you drive it as hard as it will go for a few moments then stop it and open the bonnet you will smell the heat and maybe see some smoke from the exhaust manifold at the rear of the engine on the side thats seized. It gets seriously overheated due to the restriction on the exhaust with the turbo not spinning.
