Well here comes what`s becoming my annual whinge about garage prices where I live !

Last week had MOT costing £50

Failed on track rod end and front tyre , (Result , I thought )

Today , I supplied the tyre and TR End ( Thanks john300zx )

Charges : Labour

To fit Track rod end : £126

To fit tyre : £ 35 !!

Valve and balance , Tyre disposal , " Environment " and " Sundries " (WTF ? ) : £ 23

So , with VAT , bearing in mind I supplied the parts , the total was : £216

Am I mean ? Does that sound reasonable ? Bearing in mind West London .

Opinions welcome .

Looking at the two MOTs I`ve done 895 miles in a year . Added to the usual tax and insurance costs , I pay about £115 p.a. for a parking permit . Fookin` shoot me , I`m an idiot ! But I do love it :p

think you got a little ripped off there mate, I wouldn't think it would cost more than a tenner MAX to fit a tyre :(

I know , mate , but it was too late after the event . But thanks for making me feel better :D

Of course , many people on here have had huge costs in general terms and I admit I`ve been fortunate .

mate thats way too much for them little jobs, seen as ur a zed owner they must have seen you coming.

you should get your hands dirty and replace the track rod yourself its easy basic, then get it alligned somewhere like protyre.

To replace a tyre, the best place is somewhere like a garage who deal in just new and used tyres who fit tyres all day long it would take then 5 mins and £10 is loads of money for a 5 min job, maybe even too much.

If i had them jobs done it would have cost me just 10quid to replace the tyre and 60 odd quid to get the wheels aligned. then the rest for the parts.

I go to this place for laser alignment.

They are based just up the M1 in hemel.

Not sure if it too far for you to go though?

Did they not do an alignment when they fitted the new track rod end?

Have to say the costs seem a bit much, but you are in london and they seem to think they can charge what they like.

Give us a PM if you go to wheels in motion and I may come over and meet you if I am on nights.

Darrell

As Darrell said, Wheels in motion. The guy I emailed said he was in Watford though?

Much appreciated ,Darrell :)

Visited KwikFit today and this is what the guy said :

Although the n/s front tyre is only slightly worn on the inner side and is legal ( the o/s failed ,also worn on the inner side , then replaced ) , even if they aligned the wheels the slightly-worn tyre would throw them out of alignment straight away .

So I asked if they would fit a Falken 452 to match the other three . No , they don`t either supply them or fit them . He seemed a trustworthy enough guy , but , just in case he is following company policy to get customers to buy tyres from them

My question is :

Do I really need a new n/s tyre ( it`s got loadsa tread )

If that`s the case , so be it . I`ve already found a mobile fitting company online , which I wish I`d used before being ripped off by my local garage :nono:

Or can the wheels be successfully realigned as the tyres are ?

  • 6 months later...

Did you go in there talking all posh?

That plus a smart looking car and they'll triple any bill.

I always get well Kappa'd up before going to any garage and that keeps the bills down.
