A rather clever chap presented a report on these things . His argument was that they slow trafiic down , add to polution in cities and cost fortunes to install and maintain . The reasoning is that without lights , drivers aren`t left sitting unneccessarilly at red lights when there`s nothing preventing them going ahead , causing extra pollution . There is no need to race to catch a green light , or the revving away , waiting for the green . Asked about whether drivers would drive too fast , he pointed out that drivers approaching a junction without lights

slow down and use common sense and courtesy to decide who goes first .

This has been trialled successfully in parts of Sweden , or was it the Netherlands ( anyway , somewhere more progressive than here ! ) There , it gave pedestrians the same rights as drivers , (we`re all pedestrians as soon as we step out of our cars ) . Whether that would work in London for instance...hmmm

Another point made was the debasement of our public spaces with yellow and white paint all over the roads , and all the stupid road signs disfiguring our cities . " If anybody painted all that stuff on walls , they`d be in trouble "

I think he has a good case for trials to be carried out in certain areas and monitored over a sensible period of time .

Food for thought , Zedders ?

Read and discuss

you bring up a good point, this really pisses me off, especially when there are NO cars even in sight but they insist on pressing the damn thing, they have a look to make sure road is clear then they cross, only then does the light turn red and we have to wait like muppets. aaaaahhhhh frustrating. And dont get me started on zebra crossings, humans seem to think they are magic carpets and just cross without a care.

there is a crossing at the end of my road where people have died crossing because its on a corner and you cant see the crossing until last minute this also causes car accidents.

androids all of em,can understand the elderly and kids but you get fit young people doing it and they stand and stare like they have had a planet of the apes brain lamotomy

i think it depends on the location - yeah there are places where lights are needed. but take the main road past where i live for example - in the space you would cover in 20 seconds at 30mph, there are FOUR sets of lights. FOUR. one after the other in a line. and almost always they are on red as you approach each one. it causes nothing but congestion, and of course the extra pollution. and most of the time there's no-one waiting to come across as it's a relatively quiet estate on the other side. WTF?

A bloke got into a taxi cab. Off they set towards he's desired destination. During the trip the cab driver, on the approach to a set of red traffic lights didnt slow. The passenger got more and more anxious as they approached the red lights. Zoom.....Straight through the lights without a care in the world. Fook me said the passenger that scared me shiteless. Oh dont worry me and my brother never stop at a red light the driver said smiling. and they carried on doing this throughout the journey until all of a sudden the cab screeched to a halt at a green light. Fookin hell mate whats going on said the passenger? You just jumped every red light scaring the life out of me and now you stop at a green light he said. Why dont you just bloody well go?

What. said the driver. And risk hitting my brother? :D

Ok Ok sorry, but it was topical. ;)
