Hi,

Have recently acquired a 1990 300zx N/A.

I have only driven up and down the driveway whilst I waited for the car papers to be finalized.

Went out this morning to move the car and find that the transmission is stuck in Park. No warning lights but if you pull the changer back slightly there is a regular beeping.

I have only seen this on a few cars and when you placed your foot on the bake pedal it released the lever.

Any ideas.

Regards

Rae

Thanks

So did it move from park when you pressed the brake pedal ?.

I know some cars have a tilt sensor that only lets you release it from park if the brake is pressed but this only occurs when you are on a slope. However I've never seen or heard of it on a 300zx before.

Hi,

The problem remains - Its like when the key is not in the ignition

The car starts fine.

I did take the battery out to charge but I can't see why that would cause the problem.

Thanks

Paul@swz asked "does the gear stick itself come out of park ?"

Hi,

The gear stick does not come out of park

on the front of the gear lever is a small button, press this down whilst engaging gear.

There is a little red switch down the back of the gear stick, try pushing that down (or up - can't remember).

Yes, I'm aware of the release button and this is pressed on trying to release without success. As I mentioned it feels just like it the does when the key is not in the ignition.

Sounds like the Button is either stuck or the spring in the switch has become dislocated. I've had this with Other Auto's. Try getting some WD40 into the release switch mechanism.

The fact that you have disconected your battery concerns me though. you didn't shory anything accidently did you? You could have tripped the neutral celenoid switch. this will stop you sellecting gears as a safety feature. It happened once to me on a Honda Legacy. Unfortunately for you , if it is the selenoid switch it is in the drivers footwell behind the fues box and means removeing the lot to get to it.

I'd try the WD first, then try disconecting the Auto ECU for half an hour before moving on to the neutral switch.

My cars transmission does not come out of park unless i either

a) put my foot on the brake

or

b) push the release button/pin at the front.

Dunno if it helps you though.....

Another possibility is the two screws that hold the knob on could be too long, try unscrewing them a bit and it might release it, i mention this as i replaced one once with new screws and it stopped it from working as the screws are a particular length and the ones i used were too long. HTH :)

is the car on a slight slope? if so it will pull on the gear lever makin it hard to pull it back

The car is parked on a flat service and was driven into that postion about two weeks ago.

When I tried to start the car last week - the battery was flat. This is when I recharged the battery.

After reinstalling the battery I started the car - but must admit I did not test the transmission. That was not until today.

When you start to think about of anything that has changed since things were okay - the only other thing was that I extended the earth cable to the battery as it was too tought.

Did you use a electic soldering iron? As you can sometines blow a few fueses if the rest of your main earths are naf.

Also if you have created a poor earth may also cause the problems your having.

Hi Rae its Steve, mine was stuck in park on Saturday, i had to turn the ignition while pressing the brake to get it into neutral. It might be worth a try.

(ps passed your number onto the guy with the tailgate, he's a member on here)

IIRC isn't there something in an auto ignition barrel for releasing the hear leaver???

For those of you interested - I resolved this problem

I eventually got time to check a few things -

The problem was that I had blown the power lock 10A fuse in the main fuse box. Perhaps when I replaced the battery - not sure.

Replaced fuse and away I went. First drive of this 300zx since I purchased it - I tell you , the 300zx in any form has to be the best cars to drive - as Toyota say - "Oh, what a feeling! "

Thanks for responses.

Regards
