Intercoolers what I have noticed!!!

Fitted them yesterday, and they work REAL GOOD!What I have noticed is that I now hold 1 bar of boost, and it will not ease back at all.

I did 160mph and it held all the way up there,my car has been crying out for them I guess eek.gif.

and with ducts fitted!

What you mean the wheel arch liner?

yep but with a mesh behind to allow air flow but still protect the ic's nobody has yet but i seem to remember you and i had the same views on flow through

I know what you meen about the flow, the water bottle is the main offender but Macs got the air vents in the side of the front bumper to let the hot air out

tooley if you had the wheel arch liner vented, the turbulence created by the front wheel spinning, would force the hot air back through the intercooler, hence my intercooler ducts on my front spoiler,to let the hot air escape wink.gif.

Autobox oilcooler and fitting kit was £250.

Expensive but worth it.

#As I have acces to a wind tunnel I have done some work on my car, abd some of it may be of value here also, we are straying a little from the path but this may just be of interest.

From the LSOC, posted by me.

I have also done some work on the IC 'outlet' in the front wheel arch, I have now designed something much better than the existing 'feebly' louvred piece, it is a 2 piece system, the first is actually attached to the back of the IC itself, this has rather cunning louvres on it, they are shallow angled fins, this will protect the unit from anything that may fly off the rotating wheel, the flow thru will be 97%, the next bit is the wheel arch liner itself, which will need to be cut out and an 'insert' affixed, this is also twin-vaned and internally shrouded this should make the very most of the IC in its existing place. If you take the cross setional area of the intake opening on the front bumper, then to get the same amount of air out the backe of the IC you need about 1.4× this to get the very max out of the IC, the existing is at about 0.7× so the new one will be set at exactly 1.5× this will allow for a little additional losses across the unit, it is a fallacy that the air pressure on the front will over come the restriction our cars are too slippery for that and this will make a big difference, especially if running at 1 bar!#

Hi Devil and Iain,

I am interested in this and appreciate your views. (What is LSOC?).

I have fitted HKS ICs (Johnny) and a Strosek style (Paul Bailey) bumper. It would be good to keep the smooth line of the bumper and not have visible vents (just my preference, and in keeping with my "baby boomer" status - no wings, dice, etc..).

Appreciate any further information on your posts and any advice you can give.

Thanks, Geoff

MAC,

I was interested in the effectiveness or otherwise of the plastic venturis fitted under the I/Cs of (is it) series II cars. Are you using these? I understand they can be retrofitted to earlier cars too. The idea was that they drop the air pressure behind the I/Cs to increase the airflow thru. One of mines is cracked due to a kerbing bump sometime in the distant past.

Also is water spray worth considering for burst or track use? I looked at the spray in my neighbours new Scooby STI and it does just that - gives the I/C a damn good soaking to increase cooling. Methinks that it would be easy to do same with a reservoir and windcreen washer motors and flexy pipe etc. Or is this overkill?

WillieO,

IMHO you will need a real big tank,to feed two intercoolers,I had a mate that fitted this to his Cossie, the tank was mounted in the boot and was allways running out of water LOL.

What about using the headlight washers; they are of little use, and most people take them off anyway.

LSOC = Lexus Soarer Owners Club, it is a closed forum for members only but i also post as 'Mycroft' on the GTR website, if you go there and go to the thread in 'Tuning' -Turbos in thread called Water injection, there is a whole lot of stuff from me.

If you have plenty time to spare, read these artices on intelligent waterspray, WELL worth considering! Read it even if you think you know everything about intercoolers and waterspray! very interesting indeed!

its all about getting things to work right, waterspreay systems which use A LOT of water are crap systems, you gotta get the finest spray you can etc etc, start with the top one article and work you way down smile.gif

Damn good read all you waterspray haters wink.gif

edit fucking nice one! hehe, my screen has nicely arranged them links in a table style, so make sure you read the articles part 1 2 3 4 etc hehehe smile.gif

they are titled at the top of the page! smile.gif

On my screen it left column, right column, left column right column. get it? got it? good! smile.gif

happy reading!

I like the idea of Watersports !!

MAC.#

I'm really really tempted to say 'this is not a group thing I did this for myself and a few friends so fuck off'

But would that be too cruel wouldn't it?

The work was done in a closed establishment and no cameras allowed, however there is a huge interest in this particular bit of work and I am seriously thinking of trying to get a batch made for the LSOC, they are size specific so unless at least a dozen people with WMIC here want one then I don't think it will happen for the Z, some of the Skyline guys are interested but most just fit an FMIC.

  • Author

LMAO biggrin.gif NO the reason why I ask about pictures is it cant be done to a Z without removing both water bottles, there is no room for rear ducts.

And I did not say fuck off tongue.gif
