I just bought COD 4 for the pc but cant get it to play online. When I select the multiplayer I get a message that an exe file hasnt loaded properly.

Anyone had this problem?

No... Are you selecting the multiplayer mode from the start menu or opening single player mode and clicking multiplayer at the bottom If so i could hazard a guess that its probably some overzealous firewall stopping the multiplayer version of the software, because it thinks the software is trying to run it not you (which in effect it is...)

Alternativly, it could be somthing like punkbuster, the anticheating software that can be installed with COD4... If that isnt installed properly it might throw a wobbly at you. Which exe file is it saying? iw3mp.exe? or PnkbstrA/B.exe?

iw3mp.exe is the file thats throwing the wobbler, just says it hasnt loaded properly. Also If I start the game in single player then select multiplayer, Or select multiplayer, the same thing happens. Plays ok in single player mode.

okay, so thats the actual Multiplayer version of the game, are you launching from the single player version of the game or from the multiplayer shortcut on the desktop/start menu?

Likewise, I think I am gonna be brave and try the online mode, it is i'd say the best game I have played on the pc. Am not into X-box or PS3 as I spend loadsatime on the pc.

I have looked at the patches for various fixes but am unsure as to what they are. The pc is a month old, Nvidia 8600GTS Card, Drivers should be up to date i'd say, unsure as to the processor but it plays single player no worries. What is the patch you have a fix for? I will try and fook about with the firewall.

When I select multiplayer, it says the game hasnt shut down properly and gives the safe mode message again. I selected no, now it says iw3mp.exe has stopped working. Also I deactivated the firewall and its still the same

Also a reported issue with the mp3 codec... if you go to the install folder

C:\program files\activision\call of duty 4 modern warfare\miles\

find "mssmp3.asi" and rename it to "mssmp3.bak" (make sure you have file extensions displayed in windows... :) )

That apparently fixes some problems with crashing...

well you'll need the latest version of the gameto play online anyway... so a good idea to keep it up to date.

Video card should be fine cant see it causing the issue but worth a thought :)
