Rear Differental Bushings

Fairly straight forward. Unbolt diff(2 large bolts), seperate from Subframe and then knock/gouge/burn out old bushes and out in the new ones.

Replacing the rear subframe bushes is however a right PITA job, as you have to drop the entire subframe.

The diff bushings are just mounts for the diff, to soak up vibration. Your best best would be to jack the car up (or even better on a ramp) in the air and then with the help of a friend see if you can see where the clunk is coming from while one of you accelerates on and of the throttle.

The Nismo transmission mount is a better design that the stock one, which is flawed and suffers sagging, it wont improve performance or feel, it will just mean less likelyhood of sagging. However it is firmer so could mean you feel more transmission noise, but I have'nt driven a zed with one that I know has been fitted with.

Hmmm looks like i got some investigating to do...

right im guna get it on the ramp 2mow, or jack stands.

cool keep me updated.

Ok, fitted the new nismo gearbox mount today, left the exhaust in place, that was fine to take the old one out, but a bit fiddly to put the new one back, the old mount was totaly shagged, the new one being higher made it a bit tight, but with a bit of levering and tapping it went in, another pair of hands will make it easier.

Started the car and noticed alot of noise being transmitted to the inside of the car, (I think Legrath said this could happen)took it for a test drive very noisey at around 1800-2000 rpm but dies down after that, hoping that it will settle down after a few hundred miles, the vibration that I had seems to have gone at the moment but maybe the noise is masking it.

it could be the exhaust touching something it wasn't before but I'd also check the engine mounts, if they're no good your gearbox could now be sitting at a funky angle.

Well im getting a knocking noise on and off the throttle, not much vibrartion mind you. like a clunk. im positive its not the exhaust, as its very snatchy in gear especially if at low revs like the cars rocking back and forwards........

but does the gear changing and pulling off and on the throttle feel more tight less movement and play?

I would'nt of expected the noise difference to be THAT noticable. Check the Exhaust mount that fits onto the back of the gearbox is in properly, if its not, and the exhaust bracket it touching the gearbox or anywhere else on the car body instead that would explain the extra noise.

Ok, been out looking at the car to day trying to find what was the cause of the extra noise, looked at the exhaust pipe's to see if anything was touching, all was fine. Looked around the engine bay and spotted that one of the domed nuts that hold the balance bar on was touching the strut brace that I had fitted in the summer, so I gave it some extra clearance and all is fine, have not taken it for a test drive yet but it sounds better just on tick over, the extra height of the new mount was enough to make the nut touch the brace, will take it out tomorrow to confirm this was the problem.

Thanks to MIKeH and Legrath for their help with this problem.

hmmmm i might have to order one of those mounts? how old was the standard mount miles etc?

where did you get your nismp mount from mate?

See you already got one,

Took mine for a test drive tonight and it's much better, vibration has gone but still noisier than the other mounting, (which I was warned about) hoping that over time it will die down a bit, I'll see how it goes might get a standard one if it bugs me too much. This one only cost me £45.00 inc p&p from a nissan dealer in the USA.

Cool, noise doesnt bother me too much. we will see tho. My drivechain needs improving whatever the case.

Does the car jerk when you get this noise ?. It could well be the internal clutch of the diff slipping.

I used to get this click clunk sound on my old tomei race drifting diff. Especially when you are turning at very low speeds, it's bascially because one of the back wheels is moving quicker than the other one so th clutch slips to allow the additional rotation the wheel needs and avoids locking up the wheel.

No its definatly not that, its a big thumpy thud you can really feel it through the whole car like the gearbox moving forward then back again on the limits of say a worn bush if you get my drift.

Could possibly be worn subframe bushes.....

Could possibly be worn subframe bushes.....

NNNOOOOOOOOOOO

i dont want it to be that :(

the gearstisk feels like its moving????

what can i do to see what it is?

could i jack up both rear wheels put it in gear and release clutch while someone looks underneath??

Wouldn't really help as there'd be no resistance to cause the movement. Does the gearstick move towards you when it happens? Could be the passenger side engine mount....

  • Author

yeah i think it does andy. either towards me or the other way. i just bought a nismo gearbox mount will fit that see what happens.

How hard are the engine mounts to fit???

if i get under the bonnet the engine feels solid cant move it at all the whole car moves instead........

Try getting a jack under the sump (use a block of wood to protect the sump). As you jack it check the passenger engine mount isn't separating, its just behind the aircon compressor. I wouldn't fit the nismo 'box mount until you have checked this as you risk damaging it if the engine is lifting....
