Have been looking at buying an upgraded intercooler seen a few on ebay,

firstly i saw this one which requires a lot of front assembly >

Secondy i saw these side mounted ones which look like a lot less work and less expensive too.

Are these SMIC's just a direct replacement? No issues with having to modify the front bumper or anything? I have a SWB and was looking at putting these on, just wanted to know what i was getting myself in for before i bought them!

Speak to Jimmer, he has fitted a front mount to his car and has photos of various stages of the installation.

What turbo's you putting on Stu? Those coolers would be too big for standard turbos or anything based on the gt25's. Would need to be high volume mothers or the presure drop would be too great.

Hi Mark,

They aren't mine, they are Jaffa's.

The first picture was taken at my place, when both myself and Jaffa were replacing the stock with Greddy. Jaffa has now swapped his Greddy's for the Ash.

I'm keeping the Greddy's myself, they will be running with JWT530bb's

Right. Jaffa's gone for Greddy TD05 20G or something of that ilk hasn't he. He'll need those mansters then. The JWT530bb's aren't they the Garret GT2837RS same as mine or are they The ones based on the GT25bb casings?

I always fancied the idea of replacing the IC->engine vertical pipes with one of these on each side:

you need a rad for each one though and there's no where to fit extra rads in the Zed.

What about the big hole you make taking the stock intercoolers out ;) The rad doesn't need to be big - a small custom job would fit, or even a couple of the Pace rads (about 4" tall and 18" long) up front where you'd normally put an FMIC

[edit] Ok 'big' hole is an overstatement.. but 'hole', anyway :)

I'm not sure what castings the 530's are based on. All I know is that when I ordered them 3 years ago the disco's weren't out, so my build was based around these, hense only the 555 nismo's and the downpipes and manifold for reduced lag, with this set up I should get next to no lag (or so I hope).

Just Checked BazzaJG's specs and his turbos are the JWT530bb's and i actually did a in hand comparison of them to my GT2837RS and they are the exact same turbos.

I get no lag with my GT2837RS BB's just smooth through the rev range, but because there is no thump at 3000rpm. To the point it hasn't got the drama and my friend Will thought his chipped Hybrids where as quick, but changed his mind as I disapeared into the distance.

It does however fishtail when you drop it into 3rd at 90 and nail it :D :D

Yes but you need electric water pumps and an expantion tank for each new rad. I spent a couple of hours going over this with Nend and Kirbz one night in the Dam and it is a lot of extra weight and plumbing. Surely a Nos Mister on an air cooled IC wouls be lighter and give the extra umph when needed on track days.

What down pipes and manifolds do you have them fitted with MArk ?

Mike smith manifolds and full custom Exhaust system from Leon at Alunox with divorced down pipes

I have the GT28RS (same as JWT 700BB), still not up and running yet though :(

Also have Greg Dupree's new 3" downpipes to go with them

It's not that heavy - pumps are pretty small (I have one that's maybe 3" long by 2" diameter), expansion tank is about 5" by 2" diameter, pipework very short on a front engine car..

I've done a couple of these on mid-engine Roadsters by the way - so I'm not just making this stuff up ;) You do add a bit of weight there as we have runs of pipework the length of the car.

Horses for courses, I think - they're doing different jobs IMHO. Air/air and air/water intercoolers are there for full-time cooling, a mister is there for 'on demand' extra cooling. If you're going to plumb something like that in then (IMHO) you'd be better off fitting a water & methanol injection system (like Snow Performance/AEM/Aquamist) and using that to supplement the intercooler.
