When I start my car and set off, i have a audible squeeling noise presumably from a belt. If I speed up, the noise stops. Which belt could it be and can I overcome it?

Featured Replies

mine does thatif I've got the heater, lights and radio on (so im guessing mine is the alternator one).... but stops as soon as I switch somthing off.... pain in the arse

I get this too for the first few seconds after I start the car, but it goes when I blip the throttle, so I've never really thought about it much.

How can you adjust the belt? Surely its just one length? Advice please lol

Do you have a UD pulley?

Adjustment is via the alternator.....

If you tighten the belt and it's still squealing its most likely that your belt is stretching and is fooked so replace it before it goes snap

If you still have probs with a new belt,or you wish to still use old one, this trick works a treat, from and old post of mine, for some reason there never seems enough adjustment on alternator(having said that the power steering pump is worse, virtualy none, and if that starts to slip its defo time for a new one.

Cut it in half, remove a small section and tape it back up :D If thats not shortened it enough then repeat in small increments. :D

 Carefull someone will believe you

What ever happens get it sorted asap!!!

I left mine too long (kept on meaning to adjust it but never got round to it) and the belt eventually shredded and snapped @ 80 mph and took the other 2 with it  Fortunately i noticed the battery light come on and temperature start to go up and pulled over immediatley before any damage done......

Done a search but cant find any threads on how to sort it out. Could someone do a simple walk through for a simple chap :)

Remove undertray if fitted. Undo 17mm bolt slightly at top of alternator. You should see the adjuster under the alternator, banana shaped bracket. Look on the back and undo the 12mm nut slightly. Then tighten the 12mm bolt running through the adjuster to pull the alternator across. Tighten everything back up and refit the undertray....
