Hi Guys,

put the 300 way in the garage as i don't like driving it in winter and bought my self a non runner espace... Diesel 1997 (*I know..... fool*)

Any way, I was told the head gasket has gone but now that I’ve got it home, the whole engine bay is covered in oil???? does this mean its a lot worse than just a head gasket???? or is it possible a pipe has blown under the pressure which has sent oil and water all over the place.

I can’t see very well what’s going on in the engine bay as there is not much room..

any one got any ideas????? is it possible the heads cracked..

Waiting patiently for you advice and help, and biting my nails at the same time

has anyone taken an espace engine out before?????

Cheers

Tony

Definatley sounds well shagged, but possibly fixible, you say there is loads of oil, how much? is it on top of the engine, as this would lead to either the oil filler cap or a pipe has come off. If the head gasket has gone and it was being towed, the front wheels would turn the engine. Hopefully it was left in neutral.

You need to find where the oil has come from, then give it a clean, If it turns, you need to do a compression test, to see the extent of damage.

The heads arent too bad to do, if you think there isnt much room, you should try doing a zed.

Get onto a breakers and see the price of an engine, as it might work out nearly the same to replace the whole thing

Yeah was gonna say - DON'T bother trying to fix it, for the cost of a s/h engine it just aint worth fixin yours...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help, on closer inspection the water tank although empty is all oily in side, tell tell sights that it might not be just a head gasket..

have been told the head may be cracked by a friend, as you said well shagged..

I do think andyduff is right, it just might be better to get a s/h engine as i have been told that these engines have sleeves??? ( in the piston cambers) that can move when over heating has occurred that will cause problems and the guy i bought the car off can't be trusted.

What did i pay mmmm £530 for a 1997 DT-X espace..

body work not bad but little bits here and there need doing, probable better of paying more and getting something half decent, now going to end up paying the same amount and having to do all the work out of a Haynes manual, which they don't do for the espace, need to use the laguna.

and its so cold out there, how did i get into this mess????

Now I’m buggered!!

Deffo get another engine - if oil has mixed with the coolant then the chances are the bottom end bearings will soon go even if you repair the damage now. The antifreeze mixes with the oil and turns to acid. You should be able to find an engine fairly cheaply :)

530 pounds or pence?! I bought a 1997 renault laguna a few months ago with 8 months MOT and not much tax for £460, interior is imaculate and there is one little scuff on a wheel arch.

Shes now done 105k and runs sweet as a nut.... (bought with 97k)

I'd take it back ,get your £530 and start again. More trouble than its worth... I presume you cant need a people carrier since you use your zed the rest of the time??
