Just replaced the rear pads on my ZX about 2 weeks ago. I now have a funny sound coming from, what i think is, the rear of the car. It sounds like a quiet clunk. Its more of a fast repetative thud but not loud really.

I dont notice it when I accelerate but only when I coast.

Any ideas.

Cheers

Have you taken the wheels off to make sure the calipers have not come loose.

Check for wear on the discs as well.

Anything else been changed since ?

May be worth getting this moved to help and advice for more visability.

No not changed anything else...

Will try and get wheels off on Saturday.

Not got too many miles to do until then, thankfully.

Have you rechecked the wheel nuts ?

Not recently no. Will do...

i know its a bit of silly question but you did put the backing shims back on the new pads did'nt you, cos if you did'nt they wont sit in the caliper right.

Erm, cant remember. Dont think I had anything left over from when I did it. So if I took them off the old pads then I would have thought to put them back on.

Will check it this weekend.

What could cause the noise if the shims are not in?? Is it the pads not sitting right when there is no braking force??

Cheers

yeah they'd be loose you could actually move them with your fingers, they're like a backing plate to keep them tight and you don't usually get them with new pads, you have to use the old ones.

I'd say to check the wheelnuts too - and not just with your fingers (use a brace). I had some rear tyres changed a couple of years ago and 4 of 5 of my left wheel studs sheared off and all the right nuts were loose after about 20 miles of driving. I couldn't work out what the funny noise was either.
