What size are your plates?

The motorist is an easy target and quick money....especially with their Christmas party coming up.....

I'm sure he felt like he had caught a real criminal...... :mac1:

They got me last month as well, I asked garage for "motorcycle" font and the one they gave me is just too small (by 2 mm), then the orificer decided that even though my car is Jspec that the rear no plate space was large enough for UK plates, so I dutifully got UK plates made up and they were too large for the bumper.....................arse - £30 ticket and £50 for 2 sets of number plates. :headvswal and they wonder why nobody likes them :mac1:

Areseholes,

Gone up though. Used to be £20 when i was on Bikes a few years back!!

Had a small No. plate on my streetfighter that read 'My Other Bikes Your Daughter'

That Pissed 'em Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can (aparently) contest the penalty fine if you can prove that the front bumper is incapable of accepting a normal UK-sized plate. There is some documentation with regard to this on the DVLA or Dept of Transport website (but I'll be damned if I can find it ... :headvswal )

They are 3/4 size on the front. I knew this wasn't strictly legal but it means more air can flow through to rad and oil cooler etc.

I now have to sort out a new plate but don't want the normal size plate.

Does anyone know if it is legal to use a "stick on" plate like Wozzer uses?

You used to see the sticker type ones on MX-5`s quite a bit so Im guessing they are legal, seriously considering it myself as airflow is going to become an issue soon :D

Just go completely OTT and have a sunstrip made up with 6" letters and numbers on it :D They'd probably find some way of doing you for that tho :xxx:

my brother's a copper and even he said that the only time the traffic cops do any work is when they go to an accident so your all right and he said he agrees, they have fook all else to do, bunch of fookin wa***rs oooooh you've got me started now ha ha.

So what your saying is that you knew the plate was illegal, and yet your winging that you were penalised for it?

I personally have a small plate on my bike, but i know if i stuck on for it, its because its illegal. end of. If you dont want a ticket, dont have a small plate. IT IS that simple.

No, DVLA told me that 'stick-ons' are illegal, they also stated that if your car is an un-modded (front bumper/spoiler wise) Jap import you could argue the point that your car wasn't designed to accomodate a UK front plate and it affects the air-flow. However, they covered their back by saying they do not deal with points of law - only a judge can do that, so 'plod-on-the-beat' can effectively do what he sees fit as he has no real legal guidelines to work from either....gotta love the legal system in this country

By the way it took me 8-10 months and God knows how many e-mails to various Government departments to get any remotely useful information about this issue - to quote Clarkson - "how hard can it be?" to have a definitive answer to the size of a front number plate.....obviously too bl**dy hard for the UK!!

OK, that's my rant over and done for today - sorry, doesn't help you either :(

Have to completely agree, same as when people get done for speeding, you know your not meant to so dont moan if you get caught.

only legal on cars made before november 97.

Jspec number plates should be 310mm X 160 and lettering should be 60mm high in standard type face accepted for UK number plates.

Only reason is so that the police piggy banks, sorry scameras, damn, I mean SAFETY CAMERAS can read them

cool thanks for the info, also the border only needs to be 5mm on a Jspec plate compared to 11mm for a UK

Well done, that is the write up and to qualify to use a smaller plate, it has to be mounted within the confines of a frame. I got stopped and was told my front plate was illegal but not the back. They are both the same size lettering but the back is framed by the inset in the rear bumper, wheras my front was not. So if you can get a frame to fit your plate, apparently it would be OK.

yup both of the coppers i spoke to about it mentioned ANPR in there justifications for stopping and checking dodgy looking plates, like it was a good thing lol "cos ANPR could be used to track my car if it got stolen"..............yer right like that would happen probably in breach of a twoc'ers human rights or something   :mac1:

The other bit I forgot. Which when using stick ones you need to remember is that it doesn't mater what angle they are at so long as they are clearly readable at 64 feet. I used to have all the regs on a laminated card, because I got stopped a lot at first with the plat on my blue car.

As soon as they pulled me up i just gave them the card, but one copper was so fooking anoyed because i argued and showed him the card. Then wrote down his number (because he was being abusive) and got my dictaphone out.

The barstard took it.

It isn't easy stuff to find but search long enough and you'll find the info. + The backgroud has to be reflective to BS standards. Theres a number for that somewhere. The Guys at VOSA were the most helpfull.

That copper *****cks. They tell you they tell the majistrate and they do you.

I reseached this alot about 3 years ago and no where is a frame mensioned. + if it was so how can cars have stick on plates and why don't new cars have plates on frames.

Coppers know 90% of people don't know the law and they abuse that. I Once got pulled for doing 70 mph on a duel carriage way. Copper told me it was 60 on A roads. I corrected him and told him it is the national speed limit and that is 70 for duel carriage ways unless specified other. He gave me a ticket and sent it in with a copy of that section of highway code. They still tryed to do me until I told the majistrates that it would sue for full compensation if they insisted on wrongfully convicting me.

So they Gave me a caution. I had to get a solicitor to get an apology, caution quashed and my solicitors fees paid.

Aye they can be surly buggers sometimes, what they sometimes for get though is that nowadays with the advent of the internet all this info which they used to hoodwink you with in the past is freely available to the common man in the street.

Sorry Nick,

Yes I knew it was illegal and I am HAPPY to pay the fine. I just wanted to whinge about the fact the coppers seem to have nothing better to do!

At the end of the day a £30 fine is less than the cost of my last speeding ticket and only half the cost of a tank of petrol. I'll get over it. :D

Lucky he didn't pull me over a mile down the road where I was doing 150MPH, smoking a crack pipe while texting on the mobile... :D

Number plate sizing, spacing of letters etc became a big issue when the camera technology frenzy began.

They standardized fonts, colour, background to accomodate the cameras. So as not to miss a fine you see.

I had a spacing issue on my front plate - one letter was 1cm out of place and I got a warning letter to the effect that:-

1. It was illegal

2. Number plates must be legible for identification

3. Witnesses must be able to recognise a vehicle number plate.

So I asked how they managed to send me a letter if my plate was 'SO' illegible? Didn't get an answer.
