After years of prevaricating on the subject of carputers, I've finally got one sitting in front of me. Being a bit of a Luddite when it comes to electrickery, I have to ask the following question: I want to power it up to install everything that needs installing and to generally check everything is ship shape. I'd like to do this out of the car as the cage mount I'm making isn't finished yet. It came with a cigarette socket adapter to power it, set to 19V...Is it safe to use a standard AC/AC adapter (output 9VAC) to power it up from the mains socket? If not, what do I need to get to be able to plug it into the mains?

Cheers,

Leigh.

Being a Luddite, does that mean you think you fix your new carputor with a sledge hammer and bloster? If so, let me explain Leigh. Yes a gentle beating with a 7kg sledge hammer will fix your carputor perminantley. Once fixed all you have to do is shake it until the magic bits spill to the floor. Then you can do a reading of where the parts fall and ascertain all date required for daily running.

To do a complete diognostic though you will need a devining rod, a pack of tampons and a She Wee.

You'll also need 900bhp to shift the thing if you keep putting more bits in it.

LMAO! :rofl: :rofl: :D

Sssshhhhh....don't tell anyone, but it's going in the Landy... It even has a magickal (with a definate "k") GPS goblin which means I'll never have to get lost, wander into a hick town and massacre the inhabitants again. Maybe.

P.S. The divining rod I can do, the tampons I can steal...but the "She Wee"...? Actually, on second thoughts I don't want to know...

And you'll definately need one for the Landy. Is it Leaf springs or the County with the Range Rover chasis and proper springs.

Hey are you having a snorkle. I always wanted one for my Ranger Rover but never got one.

LMAO@ the "She Wee"!! My delicate countenance is visibly appalled Mark. :rofl:

She's an '86 LR 90 (with proper suspension...and I use that term loosely as it's one of the things that could do with upgrading...it's a bit of a bone rattler at the moment!) with no signs of the dreaded rot but a replacement TD engine that could do with an overhaul (despitwe being a new block only 3 years old now. That's TD's for you...:rolleyes:). However, I have a nice 200TDi Disco engine sat folornly in the workshop crying out to be fitted...which should give it a bit more poke, especially on the motorway (top speed is 73mph on a downhill stretch with a good wind behind you...with the engine making more noise than a Luftwaffe bombing raid) and especially if I get round to fitting a full width cooler and tweaking the fuel pump...anyone got a cheap full width IC they don't want? :D ;)

Oh, and I'm painting her satin black, as the exterior is a bit shoddy, with el cheapo "truck" paint...hence my post in the For Sale section looking for a spray gun! :)

Funny you should mention a snorkel...just bought one of these

and about to chop it up and fit a custom housing with an in-built cone filter! Then hopefully ask Leon if he'll make a copy of the customised snorkel that's actually well made (the welding on the original is bloody appalling!)

Not sure of the complete spec but it's listed as an Intel 1Ghz processor. I've just emailed the seller to double check as I went for the upgraded option (normally it's supplied with an 850Mhz processor).

If you think the power supply will be compatible I'd be very interested chap! What make and spec is it?

Here's a list of what I'm running:

Case has:

* PS2 Mouse port

* PS2 Keyboard port

* VGA video

* 9pin Serial

* Parallel

* USBx2

* Network/ethernet

* Microphone, speaker and headphone

And comes with:

*256mb RAM

*80gb hard disk

*1Ghz CPU

*Customised Media Engine screen/desktop/booting screen

*FM sound transmitter, wired into PC's power supply

*Wireless USB

*DVD drive

*GPS device

*Powered USB hub

i will imagine its a p3 at that spec, which this supply will run.

Ok, sounds promising, PM the make/model if it's easier chap :)

BTW, any thoughts on the above question re: powering it off the mains?

cb power supply should do it. one like this. you would have to find out how many amps it will need. anyway, one similar to this. maplins do a range of them as well.

Right, thanks. Ok, well I've mailed the seller to ask his opinion as well so hopefully I'll soon know what ampage it needs (it's all Double Dutch to me!). I'm being cautious as i really don't want to fry it accidentally! :eek:

Didn't I leave a 12v PSU over at yours somewhere for this?

Clue: Small grey thing with fins and slots :tongue:

Cheers chap, much appreciated! 4.6 block....nice :D Would've loved to have gone the V8 route in mine but I imagine the swap into a 90 is torturous and I can't afford the petrol consumption at the mo. Breaking his Disco you say...hmmm...has he sold the engine, transfer box or the rear axle with disc brakes yet? ;)
