Paul,

Firstly,

The Americans like something called Marvel Mystery Oil to get rid of lifter tick and other noisey Cam problems. Now Altho this does work. It Does NOT fix the problem, it simply masks it, so that you can no longer hear it.

Personally i dont like putting anything in my Oil, Specially some of the nasty stuff they sell over here.

If the problem is repairable without replacement parts then the problem is usually oil sedement deposits interfering with some part of the operation of the valve timing system. So basically the only way to fix the problem is to get a full system Flush done by a compedent mechanic. I would also get there recommendation on this before doing it !

If that fails then it is time for either New Cams or Valve Lifters which will hurt the pocket im afraid, (JUN Cams and Valve springs yum :o) )

the slick fully synthetic and slick tansax are good but not for curing tapping etc but when changing ure oil and adding this as well its protecting ure engine

Is that the Slick 50 stuff that halfords sell,

I think that was the stuff Rodders put in his Z when his seals were failing only to find it totally killed his engine.

It might not be, i might just be being paranoid, but if mobile 1 dont put it in there, i dont use it!

I'm not so sure about Slick-products..

I read an article a few weeks ago in a newspaper that the Slick50-company is currently involved in some major lawsuits that had something to do with a lot of engines that were destroyed by their so-called 'engine-restoring'-additive.

I also came across lots of other articles (on the internet) that did some scientific tests with several other additives (Slick50 was among them) and it doesn't matter whatever additive you use.. they won't help a bit.

There were even a few additives (Slick50 and motorup) that did damage to engine, instead of 'restoring'.

You better spend the (extra) money for a high quality oil or an extra oil change.

On a different tangent, i really cant see how a oil additive can acutally 'Restore' anything, im sure it can give the Impression of restoring something by masking it. But appart from flushing deposits from the internals, what else can a additive do to improve your engine ?

Either Fix the problem or leave the sound / smoke as a reminder it needs to be fixed or one day your bill will exponentially increase !

Time for my sedetives now :)))

thanks for your replies

after reading them I think I will probably try an oil change ,Nissan recently serviced my car and put in esso 10w-40 ,Think I will give mobil 1 a go..

thanks again

I wouldn't necessarily look to Mobil 1. It is a 0-40 which many Z'ers reckon is a bit too thin for Zs if they have any miles on them. I would suggest a 10-40 or similar. Castrol RS is supposed to be good. (10-60)

I would generally stay away from additives. A good quality fully synthetic oil should have all the additives you need.

Hi,

I tried various additives on my previous Z31, to no avail. The engine still rattled on a cold start up.

I wouldn't waste my money on them now, especially, on a Z32 engine!

Castrol GTX Magnatec, I swear by it...used it in my Saab T16 Aero. which when I got rid had done 185,000 miles and was still bullet-proof. Used it in my Supra Turbo from the day I got it, did 40/50,000 miles without so much as a tick or rattle and now use in my Z which has been on the road for two weeks in five months...not the Oil evidently!

P.S. That's the Magnatec for Advanced Modern Engines by the way...
