  poor skoda!

you will get better results using a inert gas rather than gasless wire, remember learning to weld and being really proud when i could get sweet v's in my welds, get a auto darkening mask as well , it does help

Good luck try not to set your hair on fire from all the sparks, as Retro620ti say use gas (argoshield light) as the nasty chemicals in the fluxed cored wire will turn your brain to mush. He's right about the auto darkening helmet as well as you will be starting the weld in the correct place instead of three inches away from where you want to be.

haha this brings back some memories.

My dad has a welder, neither of us can weld. Anyway he passed it over to my to weld up the exhaust on my Almera.

"dad can you smell burning???"

"omg your hair is singed"

Not only that i thought my arms were getting hot the burning smell was a mixture of burning flesh and hair. Youch!!!

Yep not going to go near a car for a while, gonna practice on spare bits of metal untill im semi-comfortable, then progress to welding my wifes gob shut lol

The best advice I was given when I started to weld was make it sound like sizzling bacon, welding is easy its the setting up of the rig that is the hardest bit.

As said don't use gasless you will just blow holes in everthing and get disheartend.

Have fun

BOC's prices have gone up since I signed up with them in 2000. It's about £40 a refill now, so make sure you knock of the main gas tap when your done!

Does anyone know how much the autodark masks cost? I just bought a normal one for £15.

Looks like the front cover lens is a strange size, you may find it difficult to get replacements once they get covered in spatter.

Very good advice. When I first bought my TopMig I cut the sills out of my old P6 Rover and welded new in all one side. By the time I'd finish the second side i'd got good at it. So good that the first side looked really crap.

I ended up getting the angle grinder out and cuting it all out and re did it.

as already said, you definitely need to purchase an auto dark proper mask, it really does help, when i first started welding using an arc welder i'd tac something completely random as couldnt see where the end of the bloody rod was, anyway a steady hand and practise is all you need, if you are you gasless type, then you really need plenty of ventilation as the fumes are no good for you at all.
