spent most of the day flat on my back taking the foglights out so i could fit my white led sidelights i also fitted my hid's and as i fitted the crystal indicators a while back they had an extra bulb holder in the sides so i wired those up to the sidelights ...dead easy just scotchlock onto the wires for the sidelights and run a wire round to the other bulb holders all i need now is some more led bulbs ( which are on order ) to complete the front light set up i think it freshens the front end up and once im out of traction ill take her for a spin in the dark lol

I live in the sticks and use full beam most nights. I have had HID's on my Zeds since about 03, but still use full beam. If your HID dip is set properley then you'll still need good full beam when progressing across country on the A and B roads at pace. + I find if you just use HID dip other motorist don't dip as they come to wards you because they don't see your Full beam drop.

I always used to use PIAA Gas charged main bulbs as they are quite good and give a white light. Until I had to replace one and bought a Halfrauds (Off road 80 watt) Ultra bulb. These are that good (£17 each though) that they are the same colour as the 8000K HID's and really light the night up. Unfortunatley they don't do them in H3's so you carn't use them for the fogs or as a cheep HID alternative for the Dips.

I've never done the rely so the dips don't come on with the main and my HID's are still fine 4 years on.

Mark - thanks for that - a few Qs though:-

This is what I want:-

1. HID on dipped beam

2. At night - when my dipped are on and I put mains on (gonna be the H1 NightBreakers 90w) the dipped can go off as far as I'm concerned (unless of course it causes a longevity issue by re-firing up the HIDs when I switch off the mains??) Edit - of course dipped HIDs should stay on when main beam is used at night........

3. Daylight - Headlight flash - only want mains not HIDS to flash.

4. Nightime - as per 3 i.e. don't want HIDs going off for a split second or 2 during a flash of mains.

5. How does that measure up with your configuration?

thanks Chris

You just need to earth only one of the bulbs usually the black wire, to any where on the body, usually a screw somwhere, it is that simple!

I believe adding the hids, earthing them with upgraded mains is the best value mod for a zed ever!!

Ray - how does your system work as regards my questions above? #28

cheers Chris

Have to say that my dip does flash with the main beam and stays on with the high beam. 4 years on and same HID bulbs and ballast. Mind you that a philips setup and the bulbs for them are about £30 a pair from the states.

My red SWB's both have a cheepo Ebay set in them. just as bright and only been in for less than a year, but replacement bulbs are onlt £7 each so i'll see how long they last like this.

how do you mean earthing them with upgraded mains? i have earthed my HIDs to the body but feel they could be brighter. Is there a way of improving the earth to increase the brightness - hardwire them to the neg on the battery perhaps?

peranaman,

To sum up. If you earth the HIDS to the body they will not go off when flashing of dipping at night (ie when the lights are turned on) but to stop the HIDs breifly coming on when you flash your lights in the day (ie when your lights are off) the only solution is to do the relay mod.

But as MarkZX says it may not be worth worrying about because the HIDs will last fine but it is up to you if you want to take that chance.

OK - thanks - I wonder if there's another way to stop the HIDs coming on during the day?? let me have a chat with my genius sparko.

Cant see the point of swithching dipped off when you put mains on; you get extra light.

even my astra keeps dipped on!

Every time you swith on hids you lose a bit of life as they are gas discharge lamps.

So dont flash too often ( how often do flash anyway ) but you switch between dipped/main a lot. so keeping them on is best compromise!

best solution is to use relay and wire up as in article if your that brave, or get auto eletrician to do it for you.

Using scotchlocks ? that will give you trouble later. They are real bad arse items to use as they cut the existing wires and allow moisture in to corrode both the connector and the wire, especially in the area they are sited.
