hi does anyone know if my knackered temp sensor would overfuel my zed so much that you would think i have a bad fuel leak cheers

If the smell is from the exhausts...then yes. If its from the engine bay or anywhere else than you do have a leak.

Leaks are common as temperates from approaching winter. Follow the fuel lines from the Filter to the Fuel rail and check for split pipes and loose clamps.

There is also a 3" piece of pipe under the throttle cover and the front of the plenum between the throttle linkages.

it seems to be coming from the middle of the engine the filter is new and i cant see any probs along the line but i defo need a new temp sensor as its green and crappy the smeel is very strong in the morning on the first start up

As above... check and tighten all fuel line connectors...mine were leaking by the fuel regulator....the connectors were quite loose in the cold weather!

had the same problem but fitted one of smithys braided steel fuel line kits , try DTA or Smithys dead easy job ( thanks Dan ) and adds a nice bit of bling as well as removing about 6 joints that could leak

cheers for the replies im gona check it over then get the braided hoses from smithys

if its from middle of engine check the the pipe under the intake can be a bit of a bugger to get to though

sprinkle some talk around there if its just a slight leak youl spot it easily

talcum powder*

When I had a strong smell of petrol, it was the fuel regulator leaking. (A common problem as I am lead to believe)

Thanks for that I also have a leak. I will have a look.... ;)

just been chasing a few leaks on mine, and it seems that the original fasteners lose their grip over the years.

I just replaced them with standard jubilee clips and now all is fine :)

Good point, its not uncommon for injectors to start leaking at this age. Actually I believe an injectors lifetime is typically only given about 10 yrs.

hose directly under the FPR at the back running down to the injector rail - you dont need talc if you can smell it! Its pouring down to the vee ond down the back of the engine. Look under the car next time and you will see it dripping onto the ground!

You really need to take off the trim cover mid plenum thats over the throttle cables to be able to see it. I'm sure some people have changed the FPR thinking it was leaking but it just looks that way. Cold mornings shrink the aged hose enough for it to stop sealing. Its not hard to replace all those hoses with 8mm high pressure fuel hose.

this sounds a quick, easy and cheap job to do and maybe even as a preventative measure before it happens to the old hose. Leaking petrol is not only a waste of money but it is also pretty dangerous. would be nice if this squeezed out a few more mpg too.

I used to have a faint fuel smell sometimes but that seems to have gone away since i went round my engine bay with a fist full of cable ties tightening up any hoses.....oh and i removed the empty petrol can from my boot around that time too!

One question. Where can i buy this 8mm Fuel hose? I have found it online but do they sell this stuff in shops and if so which ones?

Halfords had short lengths of the 8mm high pressure stuff.

The reason this problem gets forgotten is that it only happens in very cold weather and as the engine warms up the hose seals again and the smell disapears. Fortunately it runs down the inlet side in the vee and not onto the hot exhausts. It only gets worse though and obviously is a fire risk if there are any sparks going on under the bonnet.
