Just after downloading Athene's newsletter I asked my box of wonder to print it off. You'd swear i asked it the fcuking meaning of life :mad:went crazy and froze for the millionth time. I've got an old compaq which i bought second hand 5 years ago and it's now time for the bin.

So Fcking sick of this, I won't even go to the pics/media section anymore because it's in danger of blowing up if i do. If there was a competition for slowest computer of the month i'd sure win that too :(

First thing tomorrow i am going to pcworld to be annoyed by rude salespeople, ripped off because i won't know what i'm buying, but come out with a big box containing a decent laptop..I hope. If anyone's got advice on laptop's nows the time

no probs. and whatever you do, DONT let them try and con you into buying an EI SYSTEMS laptop. they are an absolute pile of shyte. they have had more of those back in the service department than they have sold.

Don't go to PC World ffs! Rip off city IMO

Try http://www.ebuyer.com

andy. not a lot of difference now between ebuyer & pcworld. also, if it goes wrong, at least with pcworld you have somewhere to take it back to, ebuyer is internet sales only. thats the way i would look at it anyway.

PC World you have to take it back to the store, ebuyer come and collect it for you :D Yes, I'm lazy  ;)

You can do a lot worse then Dell. Assuming that your PC will run for long enough to order from their web page !

Seconded, dell's support is very good. I recommend dell's to anyone who just want to use a computer out-of-the-box.

You can call them on 0870 152 4699

I disagree Pete. I've just had a customer who has been told to restore their PC to factory settings because they had a faulty modem FFS. Most of their tech people seem to just follow a script and have no real knowledge IMO. They're reasonable machines, until they go wrong and with the quality of components used (especially in the Dimension range) they usually do in my experience :(

Still, you get what you pay for and if it's a cheap PC it's got cheap or end of line components..

I think the standard answer from large pc manufacturers these days is "reinstall and see if that fixes it" mainly because most of the time it would. The problem then gets escalated if that doesnt work

I have a couple of Dell Dimension PC's and they've been no probs at all. Worked straight out the box first time. Delivery was quick and exactly when specified.

Never had to use their Tech Support so can't comment on that.

Too late Andy, got myself a compaq presario (or something like that) from pc world with a 3 year guarantee  yeah i know. But I have the warranty, covers accidental damage and all that.

Very happy , nice bit of kit ,only thing is it's windows vista, but i'm sure i'll get used to it. I'm still on my antique for now, fun for the weekend transfering all my stuff over.

Unless you have bought a high end laptop you can garuantee it wont have enough RAM to run Vista properly, go to crucial.com and get at least 2 Gb imho

should only cost about £60

Reckon i'm ok there, can't remember exactly the spec but it's fairly high from what i looked at in the shop.
