yeah i can get 3rd part f&t, but the question is shall I.

I will only do a 6mile drive a day to uni no more than 10mins each way usually in traffic!

also I know hot fix f$£k all and dont know any 1 either

how much is a proper 60k service ??

Pallys IMHO if all your savings will be gone, when you buy your Z and insure it,I would say DON'T BUY ONE,If the turbo fails that will cost you around 2k,gearbox 1.2k etc etc.

When these cars came out over ten years ago they were around 34k to buy.

Now you can pick one up for just a few k,and there is no guarentee that it will be trouble free motoring these cars a not cheap to maintain so think before you do it wink.gif

Pally,

From what you've said m8, you can afford to buy one but you can't afford to run it.

Skimp on servinging and maintenance and you're asking for trouble.

Tim

A word of warning. I went for a cheep one, big mistake and like a lot of people here have since spent more than the buying price to get it sorted. There are bargains to be had but generally you are going to get what you pay for. At the very least get someone who knows what they are looking at to check it out before you part up with your cash. Also bear in mind that you are at best looking at 18 -20 mpg so not a cheep run around.

Having said all that I can honestly say it’s the best car I have ever owned and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

I'm sure one of the nice boys in here will go with you when you find one you like and check it over for ya wink.gif

guys n gals I still want one of these and i am being teared apart I dont know wat 2 do.

i am from Leicester. the most miles a will do a year is about 5000mls, the cars ive been looking at have their cambelt done already recently, are around 70000 mils 1991 or 92 and are usually priced around £4500. how reliable are the engines? i dont drive fast-i look after my cars, how many miles can gearbox handle? wat about automatic TT, this cud save a gearbox rebuild? or shall I go for the NA ?but then I probably wont get1....

plz help, cheers

Stupid question but... If you don't drive fast why do you want a Zed? biggrin.gif confused.gif

bcuz they r rude ass cars, and thrash any car u will break it no matter wat it is and i cant afford a list of repairs as long as my arm :->

Read the buying guide my friend if you really want one. Very difficult to get a good one now unless you import direct from Jap Land IMO(in my opinion) so be careful.

If you're at Uni I wouldn't have thought(unless you have a massive inheritance fortune tucked up somewhere) that buying a Z would be a good idea.

Ask SRRAE(Stu) what running a Z is like on a student budget...LOL biggrin.gif

if ya dont get one you'll never know the experiece, and if it goes tits up you'll have the experience,if it dos'nt a better experience! if ya wanna drive around with a big f***off smile on ya face get one,i did and i have:0) YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE! TonyC

zx3.jpg

yeah i go uni but its in my home town, ihave a prt time job at asda, live at home, my only expense will be the car, oh and i may use my student loan if i buy 1.

so r the Zs around now too rough, so how much is importing a stock 300zxTT gonna cost in total ??

Yes. I can just afford to own one. However if somthing major goes I am gonna have to leave it on the drive for 6 months before I get the capital.

Plus really only driving 6 miles to Uni and back is not gonna do the engine or your MPG any good. By the time you get there the the engine would have only just warmed up. You would probably only be getting about 12mpg. £20 of petrol in my old Astra, besides nearly filling it, would last me 2-3weeks. £20 now only lasts 4-5 days. My first week of having my car I spent £100 on petrol, just driving round.

I drive 25 miles to uni sometimes 90% of it at National Speed limit which makes it do more MPG, but there and back costs me £8 or so in petrol, if there are no Jams and there usually is. Twice some one has had a go at my car at Uni. Once the door handle was smashed and once some one took 4 of the 5 nuts off my wheels.

Yes you can get TPFT insurance. I got my Z when I was 21, and it cost me £1,100 (Tesco), plus interest, I was paying £104 a month insurance, and thats with 3 years NCB. So you are looking at £50 a week for the car, just for petrol and insurance, providing you only do about 120 miles a week.

Then there is the maintance:

Oil:

Oil change every 4000 miles. Thats not too bad. Probably only cost about £20 in oil and £8 for a filter.

Tyres:

The best tyres will cost £150 each, cheap, and in my opinion, dangerous tyres, will still set you back £70 or so each.

Service:

Cam belt service and all the other stuff there, water pump etc will set you back £500 or so. But only need to be done every 60,000 miles. Try get one with the longest to go. Spark plugs last for 50,000-60,000 miles and are over £10 each.

Need to drive

Trust me every sunny day you will want to go driving every where. Bye bye petrol biggrin.gif but its fun.

Its not fast enough

Trust me. After 6 months you will want it to go faster. You will want induction £150ish, new exhaust £450ish and more, which will slap on £150 on your insurance too. frown.gif

Trust me it can be done, if you are willing to spend more than £50 a week on it, and you pray every night that you car remains health.

I dont drink and I dont smoke, so all my friends who spend £20 a week on cigs and £40 a week getting bladdered every week, that is where my money for my car comes in, plus put 2 student loans ways for if the car does go boom.

I have had my car just over a year now and I have had it very very lightly with problems. But every time a slight niggle happens my heart stops. I have also spent loads on it.

Traction Control £600 (Thanks Ajay biggrin.gif)

Tyres £500 (Bridgestone)

Alarm CAT1 £250 (Immobliser was already on)

Induction Kit £125 (Hurry up Smithy wink.gif)

Petrol Over £3000

Bushes £50

Spark Plugs £80

Air filters £15x2 every 10,000 miles

Oil changes £250 (Nothing but the best oil)

Really its down to you. I dont go out that much. Once or twice a week to have a game of pool with my friends, which costs about £10 with drinks, or go the pictures with my girlfriend again £10. If you are a person who goes out a few times a week and drinks quite a bit. I dont think you can afford it.

However if you are a saddo like me wink.gif go for it.

My view on the car at the moment is, if in the end I cant afford it, I tried and I learned a lesson which will be vaulable in the future. I still could sell the car and get something still sporty but cheaper to run. There would be more at risk if I tried to run the car and fail when I moved out in my own home.

Any way there are my thoughts.

E-mail me if you have any questions.

P.S. Import is a big NO NO, for us young'uns. Imports are more expensive to insure. Its a few hundered more for some of these old Dinosaurs tongue.gif (you know Im joking) but add to that our age and it will be £400 difference.

[This message has been edited by SRRAE (edited 28-06-2002).]

Im am 25 and drive a import NA. My insurance living in Cambridge with 3 years NCB was 800 a year. The decrease in price for third party fire and theft was less than 10%, so it is not worth the risk.

If you read through the posts on this board you will see that almost everyone is either upgrading or repairing all the time. So owning a Z is expensive either through repairs or the constant drive to upgrade.

If you do decide to get one you should have JeffTT check it out. He is based near you in Tamworth and has a inspection service.

Insurance eek.gif

I'm 27, living in London, FULL NCB, driving a 1990TT import(no mods).

I've just got my insurance renewal through frown.gif

£1210.32 eek.gif

and excess has gone up to £270 mad.gif

Good luck mate biggrin.gif

I do highly recomend the Z though biggrin.gif

cheers guys n gals i really appreciate ur advice.

I will keep a lookout for a Z ive put a note in the sale forum, but i dont know wat to expect if anything. Most of the Zs are nearer to London and im from Leicester so if I went to look at 1 who would inspect it??

ive testdriven a zxtt auto from a garage in kibworth wanted 8000 was very nice and out my price range but just wanted to drive it, very nice car but that 1 had a problem because it was slow when accelarting, no where near 5-6secs more like 8-9secs, must of had a turbo problem or summat.

SRRAE how much did u pay for ur Z?

also how much to fix the turbos if they get knackered ??, gearbox ??

Nice one Tim, another warm welcome shown to a potential new member!

On a serious note though Pallys. Buying a Z or any other car of this calibre is going to burn a BIG hole in your pocket. The idea of owning a 300ZX might sound great but, under the circumstances, ask youself this - Can you really afford it?

Look at it like this, I just sold my Supra TT because I needed to start saving and I earn a fair wad of cash (ask Nico) ;-)

If you do decide to go for it, try looking at other ways to bring your insurance premium down (get someone else to insure it and be a named driver on their policy), work more hours at Asda, stay in more, ditch the girlfriend, etc and most importantly ENJOY!

Good luck!

Peter

Hmmm.........

When my Z goes wrong (touch wood) nothing major has happened yet (touches wood again) but the things that need doing that are very minor still cost a packet, i.e. this month;

100 squids'ish in petrol

Fuel Regualtor

Fuel Dampner

Thottle Position Sensor

Speed Sensor

(the four above cost 80 pounds but should have been just 80 for the Fuel Regulator on it's own!!)

Tax

MOT (no work needed)

Insurance

New Rear discs and pads 165 pounds

So this month I'm in for about 800 squids which is nothing going wrong!!

Next month I am to buy some new boots (tyres) gearbox flush 120 squaids and finally a full service about 120 squids

So plus petrol I am looking at about 600 pounds next month............

I'm not trying to put you off but you must really think about whats best for you and your wallet.

If I was you I would seriously look at buying an S13 200SX, I had one before I bought the Z and it was great fun to drive and was a little easier on the wallet too.

But then it's upto you, I would wait and save some more cash then go for it.

If you do go for it, make sure you get a good one or you could be selling it as soon as you bought it for a lot less cause of the problems you find........

Matty.
