Anyone know if it's possible to compression test an engine not in the car??? If it is possible how is it done, I have a tempoary engine to put in the car and want to make sure it's ok before I spend a few days doing it. I know I could take the heads off to check pistons/valves etc but as it's only tempoary I would rather not!

Gear box is still in car. Would mean getting the engine in and connecting it to the box and some of the wiring, also the engine is from a manual so would need to change the bits over. I was hoping there was a way to do it out of the car to save alot of work. I think if I did that to find bad compression I would :hurl:

That will still work won't it
Mine is an Auto  Any other way?

You could use the autobox bellhousing!

auto or manual makes no difference. No wiring change or anything else needed.

Unbolt bellhousing from autobox and bolt up to engine. Bolt on starter motor and use 2 piece of wire to connect a 12v battery to the starter which will cause it to run and turnover engine.

Thanks, didn't realise I could get just the bellhousing off. Thought it was whole box out or engine back in to get them together
