I am having my autobox replaced next week and only have 1st and 2nd gear. I am driving the car "gingerley" but the urge to put my foot down occasionally gets the better of me!!

When I do really go for it and eventually stop, there is a smell and some smoke coming from the back of the engine?? Any thoughts? I also need to replace the gearbox oil seal too and it has been suggested that it could be this oil being burnt on my exhaust?

Thoughts please! :-)

more than likely oil dripping on to a hot exhaust most probably rear crank seal most common to go. Like you said ideal time when box or engine is out.

I've in exactly the same boat, i've been driving with only 1st and second for about a month now while awaiting manual conversion, just short trips around the village. The temptation is there to floor it all the time but i don't want to screw my engine up too!
