Bloody thing! Its nver failed to start even though I've had this running problem. Drove to work fine, 10 hours later, won't start???!!!!

Fuel pump runs, and I can smell fuel as I turn it over but it won't fire.

Had a quick look in the dark but all connections ok.

So, would the PTU just give up like that?? Maybe thats been breaking down and causing my hessitation problem??

Thoughts please guys and girls.

Hi. When the PTU plays up it's usually just one output (or cylinder) that goes down. Having said that, it is also possible that it has failed completely, or that the +12v supply isn't getting to it due to a wiring problem. The CAS sensor can also cause hesitation problems, but wouldn't normally result in a no-start situation.

The CAS actually sends a signal to the ECU when it detects TDC, the ECU then fires the injectors up, the CAS and PTU will both if faulty can prevent start up. The CAS unlike the PTU if faulty simply prevents start up, the PTU can cause uneven idle/hestitation and failure to start.

To test the CAS mate mark the position of the 3 x 10mm bolts that secure it in place, remove bolts and then CAS, connect the harness back on, turn on iginition and turn the spindle at the back of the CAS slowly, you should hear the injectors clicking, if you don't, it's fooked and car will not start. For PTU there are shit loads of second hand ones around, takes 5 mins to fit, if this works, save up to eventually buy a series 2 PTU at around 130-150 quid.

Well went to work and got the zed going. :hyper: It appears that all the wireing along the timing caseing has gone hard and brittle, when I bend it the engine cuts out. So, there must be a wire broken inside.

So, tomorrow its out with spare wire and a soldering iron and cut it back till I get to the soft stuff.

I suppose this could be the source of my hessitation/breaking down under load, thoughts anyone???

Thanks for the offer Paul, but keep my spare PTU in the car, safer that way with an old Zed. Although I suppose an 8mm spanner would of been a good idea as well :headvswal

Cheers everyone.

Good to see someone finishing a thread with the eventual reason for the fault. Too often people are fogetting this - obviously just happy that their Zed is going again.
