I've had a 300ZX for almost 10 years, 95000 on the clock, it's been a great car and still is but it's just failed the MOT due to exhaust emission not being up to required standard. Having had it checked it's cats or sensors but it's a big job because it's not easy to access and the mechanic I have used is not keen to tackle it as it's a specialist job. Has anybody out there had similar problem or can anybody suggest where I can get the job done without going to a Nissan dealer and paying through the nose ?

I've just bought a 350Z and will want to reluctantly sell the 300Z but don't want to pay a lot to make it saleable. If anybody out there is interested in buying it at a reduced price and can sort out the emission problem I'd be interested too. It's mechanically and bodily very good.

what year ..as exhaust emission on a 89/90/91 don't need to pass emission law's ,,you can de-cat them too...;)

..

Harsh man!A few cars ago was a Vectra 99 and had the Emissions of a Landrover apparently XD So my mate just stuck the pipe up a shitty Punto and called the Passed Emissions Mine! Then Gave me a Recommendations slip saying Exhuast Leak! And do you think i fixed that :P Nope...... Not until i had to buy a new Exhuast system as the old 1 Rusted away :P I know this has no help at all but Try and get a Recommendation as i did :D Save ya until next MOT :D

Eh?

Mine is 17 years old a flew through the emmisions test, new exhaust and new cat.

How old is the exhaust system?

What reading did you get on your cert?

Its gotta be a sensor surely...

I found the best way to get work done is diagonose it with some help on here and do the work yourself.

theres obviously something not right, whether it be in safety boost or something...

as Wozzer says, most zeds are exempt from the catalyser test due to the age.

most zeds run pretty clean anyway so its probably better to fix it than cheat your way through the test.

It's probably an O2 sensor problem, should be easy to fix. any mechanic ought to take it on if you can give them some background info. Probably best to get someone to run a ConZult test on it as the first step.

eh woz neither does 92/93/94 IIRC its 95 onwards when they have the relevant dos to test for a catalyst

as said could well be o2 related or a breather issue

they still have to pass an emission test, but its not as strict as the later cat test.

Dave what were the readings ?, as ive seen some cars incorrectly tested, ie tester has carried out a cat test just because there are cats fitted, and not bothered their arse to check what test is required

Thank you for all your responses, the car was registered March 1994, I'm getting it back tomorrow so I should get the readings then. I was talking to a friend today who has a mechanic friend who had a 300 for a few years until recently so I'm going to talk to him. All your comments help and hopefully he can too. The car is really sound and I've had some very reliable motoring with it so I hope I can get it fixed !

I've had a Sylvia, 200SX and the 300 and now I've got a 350Z so I really love Nissans !
