Hi guys,

My PC system has been infected by a particularly nasty virus which has rendered it inoperable. I have bought a new HD but need to put an operating system on it. Unfortunately, all my Windows CD-ROMS are locked away in storage in Holland (Doh...)

Does anyone have a copy of Windows 98 Second Edition that I could borrow/buy? I need it before the weekend.

If you are not bothered by legal/ethical issues concerning licenses, etc., then please e-mail me at dannyzaat@yahoo.co.uk or text me on 07876684354 A.S.A.P.

Many thanks.

Danny

Cheers mate! I "had" McAfee on it (updated it automatically when new info available) but aparently this particular virus slipped through. I have absolutely no idea who sent it to me, how (e-mail, web, docs, etc) or what virus it is. But it's completely buggered my HD.

Thanks again mate.

Danny

It's probably infected the bootsector, you must ensure that you do a low level format before a new install. OTOH a disinfection with a decent virus scanner might be able to sort it.

Norton Antivirus is the best antivirus package out there. But as glen said, keep updating virus lists regularly.

Glen's a good old stick isn't he??

I only use the brakes so I can accelerate all over again.

Hehe ta Rob!

Just to add something, if the bootsector is infected dont put the two hard disks in the same machine.

Remove your new hard disk and put in your infected one

I would first use a (write PROTECTED) Windows 98 boot disk to boot into dos and then try this:

Type

FDISK /MBR

this will write a new boot record and may tw*t the virus.

You could also install 98 onto the new hard disk and use the Norton AV disk I sent you to make some rescue disks.

Then remove you good hard disk and install the infected one - then boot from the rescue disk (Norton) and see if it can fix the problem, I wont have wrecked the hard disk merely screwed the boot sector.

You can call me after 10am at work (my work so my hours LOL wink.gif ) on 01983 539444 if you are having more problems and Ill do anything I can to help.

Peace

Glen
